I mean, lets say you just smoked a bowl of Golden Pixie Dust and the flavor was just over the top wonderful. Now your done, you drop the ash and put the pipe down. Your whole being craves that beautiful flavor again. If it were a donut, you would check your cravings knowing you don't want to spoil dinner, or you don't want to get fat, or what ever. But knowing that another pipe won't won't hurt you....
I hesitate, and then have another bowl, (in a different pipe of course).
But some folks wait, or switch it up with another blend, or something else.
Obviously no wrong answers, but what is your style. Can you have just one potato chip? Do you even hesitate to given to a second bowl?

Great question. I chose the last one, but I am never overly pedantic with my actions. I like to start off my days in a long chambered pipe with burley, usually Five Brothers. There are days I will just smoke that all day. I usually smoke the 5B as said, then will do some aros and later move to English. If I have a fantastic bowl, like Nutty Irishman is, I may have another bowl, maybe right away, maybe not. I may go to something else around me and back to the hot stuff later. What often (sorry to those who have read this ad nauseam) causes my decisions are physical limitations. I have some tobaccos in the living room and some here in the bedroom. If I want a blend of something in the other room it is up to my ability to walk that day as to if I go to it. It will be interesting to see the results. I am not sure this has been asked in such a way before.

My current pattern is to pack a bowl, leave my apartment/work and smoke that pipe. When I finish, I proceed to something else (I.E work, my son, etc). I used to carry extra tobacco and pipe, but I try to limit myself to four bowls a day. Obviously, this is not an iron clad rule.

As with most things, it depends. My most usual is taking a couple pipes with different tobaccos to the porch and smoking them one after the other.

A Smoking style? I have no particular style other than a clean pipe and my next bowl is a different tobacco.

I never smoke the same thing twice in a row, no matter how much I enjoyed one blend. Rotating seems to keep all blends enjoyable and keeps my taste buds on their toes.

I limit myself to 1 bowl/day, in a stretch maybe 2, so it's "Step away from the pipe....nobody's gonna get hurt"....for me.

When I dry tobacco, I generally dry enough for a couple pipe-fulls. It doesn't mean I'll always smoke the second round but I usually do. For example, right now I'm smoking Dark Birdseye in a meer and when it's done I'll stuff a cob with what's left on the plate. As always, nothing in stone.

I like smoking something different. Plus, I would hate for that experience NOT to be replicated under different conditions, and therefore it's better for me to have the good memories rather than ruining them. But it's seldom that I smoke more than once in a week, let alone a day. Great question though.

I hesitate a moment, feel guilty and undisciplined and out of control, and then cowboy up and decide there is no law or rule, so I smoke the same blend again. And love it again. I will admit that my hesitation is going away. I have started to slip a ways down that slope. I find myself sometimes loading up two pipes with my favored Blonde, so that my first bowl is entirely in anticipation of the second. This is with blends that have that distinctive whole mouth strong "umami" flavor. Billy Budd Blonde of course, but also Viprati, Rimboche S.J., and War Horse and a few others. If I am smoking just to smoke it is usually Carter Hall. And rarely twice in a row. If I only have time or energy for one smoke, I will go with Carter Hall, just because I don't want the temptation. I am a three or four bowls a day smoker, depending on work schedule, music schedule, and whatever else is happening.

Black Cavendish can coat my mouth at the wrong time of day. Burley is your friend. It seems to neutralize the mouth allowing me to enjoy flavors to come. Chapter 2:4 scrooge Chronicles

In today's world, you ARE an alien ! Since I only smoke 5 to 4 blends at most, probably over half of my 8 to 10 bowls a day are one blend many times one after another. For many years ( almost 30 ) I smoked just one blend all day/night, ( 759 ) .Occasionally I'd give another blend a try for a day or two then get back to my beloved 759. When it dissapeared I move to my beloved RS and now I'm moving on to a different Va. Will take me a few mo's but I'll find one and then smoke it almost exclusivly. I believe in the K.I.S.S. principle in life !

jeffd, don't be shy here,I've been known to smoke the same blend in the same pipe all day.Other days I will rotate thru five to ten pipes, some times more, most times less. And just for the record I'd eat the whole box of donuts and dinner.Especially if it's meatloaf, spaghetti, lasagna, chili,,,,,,,,,,,

So what what is this Golden Pixie Dust of which you speak? Would like to try it if I don't get lost in it for more than a few days..

There are no wrong answers. This is a golden era of tobacco. So many choices. Might as well try as many as you can.
Dad smoked only Brindley's Mixture and his brother my uncle only smokes Mixture 79 by Sutliff. For as long as I have known him. Its how I grew up. A man knew his tobacco. A man knew his drink. "What'l you have" didn't mean think about it and get back to me.
But my thought is different than that. It is the response to great and compelling taste. My question starts with that great bowl you love, and what you do just after that. Do you have a second oreo? Because you can, you know. You are not obligated to switch it up, you are not obligated to run out your half empty tins before opening a new one, you are not obligated by the age of your cellar or your cellaring strategy. There really is no reason not to have a second oreo.
Or is there?

Sometimes I want another bowl of the blend I've just finished. Sometimes I just want to smoke that blend all the live long day. I'll often smoke more than one bowl in the same pipe, but I give the pipe a clean out between bowls.

Depends...in the AM I like burley blends with coffee. During day I’ll dabble with other blends in various pipes. Sometimes back to back blends in same pipe, sometime same blend different Pipe or completely different blend in different pipe. One of the benefits from having a wide and deep cellar as well as nice rotation of pipes. A lot of babble to say “other”....

I like variety but if a particular blend offers an over the mountain experience I usually have another bowl immediately which seldom produces the same experience so my next bowl will be of another blend. I’m always searching for a blend that gives the over the mountain experience. I find most any blend can and will provide the elusive over the mountain experience at some point.

I like a bowl of Billy Budd Blonde in the early morning, and another mid morning. After lunch I like a bowl of Billy Budd blonde. Come evening, I love a good couple of bowls of Billy Budd Blonde, followed often by a bowl of Billy Budd Blonde. Sometimes, in between all of the above, I will have a bowl of Billy Budd Blonde.

I also never smoke the same blend twice in a row any more. When I have a terrific bowl, I'm happy with that and move on to a different blend.....sometimes rite away....sometimes a break is taken. I have done it in the past and the second bowl was never quite as good as the " over the top wonderful bowl".

I actually do the first three on and off, but smoking another blend is most frequent. Not sure if that really counts though, because except for HH ODF, they are all lat. Blends. #4 discipline? What's that? "...if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing to excess," said someone.
