I picked this up last week at Iwan Ries: imgur.com/a/Ypt7PbBAs far as I can tell it’s early post-transition, so new owners, old factory. It’s not in the prettiest condition but should be good to go, functionally speaking. It’s the widest bowled pot I have and light for its size. How’d I do?

Looks like a great smoker. I'm not that crazy over post-transition Barlings, but that is a nice one...hope it is a great smoker for you.

I have a couple of post transition Barlings that are excellent pipes. They compare favorably with the best pipes I have seen. I think they are underrated. I don't hear complaints about them, just that they are not as good as the old ones. Well, what is? How are they inferior?

I don’t have any older Barlings to compare but so far I’m enjoying my first bowl in this one. Pulled out the Penzance jar. Watching the F1 practice session.

I love that shape! I have the same shape in a smooth BB&S John Peel made in London, which I guess is a Barling second. Great smoking pipe, congrats on yours!

I don't hear complaints about them, just that they are not as good as the old ones. Well, what is? How are they inferior? The post transition Barlings used the same wood as the pre-transitions for three or four years from what I have heard, so the smoking quality of them is still high during that time. I believe manufacturing of them changed around 1967, and the quality isn't quite the same. Perhaps when Sablebrush gets back from vacation, which is tomorrow, he'll tell us more. He's the most knowledgeable expert on Barlings around.

The newest camera I have is a Nikon F-100 but my fave is my fathers Lieca IIIG he bought in the early 50's I believe . It's got that beautiful Summicron 50mm f1.2 lens. Haven't seen a sharper lens than that one!

Very nice snag! It's a post transition pipe. Since it has the TVF stamp, it's no earlier than 1964. My first Barling was from this period and it was, and still is, one of the best smoking pipes I own. There's this myth that the quality went straight into the toilet after the family left the business, but that's baloney. The pipes did become more variable in quality, but it was a gradual development, and after the factories closed, the pipes were outsourced to Charatan and Oppenheimer, and the quality did change. Different wood, different pipeline. I'd have to see images of the slot and button to tell you more.
My guess is that it will be a very good smoker.
