I'm still very new to pipe smoking. So far,I think,I've tried six different tobaccos. There's been two I've not liked, while I've enjoyed the others and reordered some of them already.
Now,my big gripe is that I've been ordering online, rather than in brick and mortar shops, pipe smoking seeming to be a boarder line activity in the outskirts of London. My local supermarket is supposed stock brands like Condor and St Bruno, and I plan to give St Bruno a whirl tomorrow. But I got to thinking...
Erinmore Mixture has proved to be a nice, everyday smoke, and I've gone through my first 25g like a house on fire. I've tried two different Latakia flakes, which I've enjoyed massively, but they're a more involved smoke.
Do you think that there's everyday smokers verses special occasion tobaccos? And what would you suggest for each?

Good question. I would say no. I've been at things a while but I don't have anything on hand I wouldn't smoke whenever the mood struck me.
With all due respect, you need to branch out, explore more and find out what you like before thinking about saving.
It appears you're on the other side of the pond from us yanks?

When you get to the ages some of us are, every day is a good occasion to smoke anything.

Just surpassed 50 years of pipe smoking pleasure, so I really have no special occasion tobacco’s. Except on my grandfather’s birthday.....that’s my Granger day.......that’s all I smoke the entire day.....was his favorite tobacco. I’ll use both of his Dunhill pipes on that special day.
PS I also smoke holiday blends any time I’m in the mood.

Yeah,I'm in the good old U of K😊 I'm looking at the idea of trying a new tobacco every month.

Try a good latakia blend to avoid the flake hassle. Samuel Gawith Sauadron leader or Skiff, Gawith Hogarth Balkan Mixture. Great all day smokes, madd in your backyard, so to speak.

For the first 30 years of my pipe smoking I smoked BS 759 almost exclusivly, then it went away and I picked up on Royal Yacht ( the last 20 years) till it has gone away. With no more McC's to go to I'm trying many different Va blends now.

I think we need to run Monbla off....he is like a bad actor out of a Stephen King novel....every go to blend he chooses, disappears from the market, never to be seen again!

I figure that there are some tobacco flavours you can smoke all day everyday and there are some that you enjoy but wouldn't want to smoke all the time. Light aromatics, virginias, and englishes are rather fine all day smokes whilst heavy twists, coins, or aromatics requiere you to get ready for them.

The only thing that I smoke on special occasions is Irish Condor and that is because it is no longer made in Ireland...and I don't have that much of it left...the Polish stuff just leaves me cold...don't even want to try it. They've pissed me off and I'm too old to go hunting something new.

I am planning on cracking tins of Christmas cheer every December... I have about 20 tins, so I am good until 2038 if I don’t kick the bucket.
When I go out and about and am in crowds of people where smoking is permitted, I smoke aromatics.... if they don’t like it, tough toenails... screw em, at that point I have already compromised... which as far as I am concerned, is a two way street.
That is about it in regards to special occasion smokes for me.

I have no special occasion tobacco - when I'm feeling down and out it's usually Carter Hall in a cob. That's saved for when I am bummed. Normally my favorite smoke is Luxury Twist Flake.

Condor in the States is a rare smoke as it is hard to get. I have a few packets left so I save them up. Other than that whatever strikes the mood.

There are blends that I don't have a lot of that I prefer to save for only when I'm really hankering for them. Most of the time I smoke what I feel like though. If I've had a good day, or have something to celebrate I'll reach for my absolute favorites.

I tend to ration blends that are difficult to obtain or off the market. Otherwise, I smoke whatever is tickling my fancy.

I’m one of the older guys here and I have one blend that I only smoke on special occasion, ie: my birthday, my wife’s birthday, birthdays of my children-grandkids, and holidays. I like having a blend that’s special. I enjoy many blends but Tudor Castle is special to me. No other blend pushes all my pleasure buttons like TC. I keep it special for the same reason I will only eat roast turkey on Thanksgiving and baked country ham on Christmas Day and that is If I eat turkey and ham all through the year then they aren’t special treats on the holidays. Maybe it’s vanity, but I like to be treated special, even if I have to do it on my own.

For the most part, I smoke a pipe for all the ordinary moments in life, and for extraordinary occasions I like a cigar. Not because its better or worse, but because it just feels more celebratory to me.
A pipe is like "get 'er done" while a cigar is like "got 'er done".
There are exceptions of course but that is the rut i seem to be in. Part of that is the cost. The incremental costs of pipe smoking are small compared to cigar smoking. When I started smoking cigars, my company was just starting and things were occasionally very scratchy. Going back to pipes just made sense at the time.
So considering that, every pipe tobacco I like is for smoking when ever I want. I sometimes feel like this, or like that, and I always feel like Billy Budd Blonde, even after just smoking some.

I try to dedicate one good smoke a week to just smoking for flavor and reflection time. I only have a few mcclelland blends but one I do have is Dominican glory maduro and I bought 200g of 2013 tins. I will normally only smoke this blend on those smokes and try to just be while smoking it. Sometimes it works, many times it fails.

When I am out in the yard or garage working or puttering around I usually have an old cob hanging out of my mouth. For those times I usually smoke what I call a mindless tobacco. It is usually an OTC like Half and Half, Carter Hall, the Prince or a simple aromatic like 1Q or something of the sort. Something I can enjoy without much thought. When I get a chance to sit and relax with a pipe, I usually reach for something a bit more nuanced.
I don't know if that qualifies as a special occasion or not, but sometimes I find kicking back with a pipe filled with some tobacco that I have been looking forward to smoking pretty special.
