I assume many of you keep a smoking log.
On the one hand it seems a great way to keep track of the blends you like and don't, and also to see how your tastes change over the years.
On the other hand, it gets in the way of spontaneity.
I don't know anyone who does this, but it seems like it could be fun.

I don’t log what I smoke on any particular day. I do have a well detailed spreadsheet of what tobacco’s I have stored and getting some aging. Any tin or bulk jar I pull out to smoke I immediately remove that amount from my data base and print a new spreadsheet. I now keep a spreadsheet when I’m not at home....where is home....only God knows for sure....I don’t !!

So you are keeping a kind of running itinerary of your cellar. For the size of some of y'all's cellars this seems almost mandatory.

I log what I'm smoking on the WAYS thread. That'll do the job for me.

I used to keep a log of my tobaccos...did it in excel...looked cool...never updated it so now it is an artifact to look at. At my age, I don't really care as long as I have tobacco to smoke...you youngsters, you can do it. I wouldn't put it out there on the internet "cellar" just because the feds can look at it. Sort of like the folks that signed up for medical marijuana...if they change their minds about the legality...guess who they are gonna come looking for first. No Thanks!!

I googled some really cool leather bound smoking journals. Wow. I am such a sucker for such things. A really good pen and a leather journal and I have the urge to keep track of something. Anything.
On the other hand, I really hate paperwork. I do so much of it at work, I don't want to do more for free.

I guess it would make sense to write down my opinions on blends for a quick reference. I should also really start keeping track of the cellar. Guess I know what to do with the leather journal I bought on amazon a few months back. haha Thanks for the idea.

My log is in my brain, such as it is. I know what I've smoked and what I like most and what not so much. I keep track of my cellar by looking at it. Since it's on the opposite wall of my wine cellar, I see it often. All good gustatory things for the soul kept together.

I log what I'm smoking on the WAYS thread. That'll do the job for me. This, for me too. But, I don't need to go back and look to see that instead of lighter blends, I'm leaning towards heavier stuff, and the Latakia that I SWORE I'd never like. Well, now I like it. A lot. I like just about everything, and it does depend on my mood, but colder weather = smoking leathery stuff.

I bought a new notepad yesturday with the intent of keeping record of my cellar... then i realized that I would stop keeping track of it so it was best not to waste my time. However, I did write down all of my pipes and purchase dates with the original price.

I’m keeping a spreadsheet of all my “pipe habit” purchases; columns for pipes, tobacco, and accessories. I log the date, vendor, and cost. I keep s/h separate. With tobacco, I log how many oz’s and/or tins. The sheet calculates totals for cost by category and overall (a surprising number, given my short tobacco history). I use that data to keep a cellar log in a separate tab. It’s kind of fun to watch the pounds accumulate.

It never even occurred to me to do this, now I kinda want to start! I accumulated fountain pens for years and wish I had kept better data. Now it’s a bit late to start on that. So I decided I wouldn’t make the same mistake again. If nothing else, my kids will have some idea what it is a worth; maybe they won’t just pitch it!

Many a married guitar player keeps a record of the actual cost, and probable worth, of his(her) collection, so that upon his death the spouse won't sell the guitars for what he told her they cost.

To me smoking a pipe is a way to release all the worldly crap. Enough logs in life , but I'm not criticizing those that do, do what you do, how you do it and don't sweat the small 💩

I don't keep a log of the pipes and tobaccos that I smoke each time, but I do keep an Excel spreadsheet of my pipes and the tobaccos in my "Cellar".

My Dad is going back and doing that with his knife collection. It's quite a task! He threatened to haunt us if we threw anything out or let Mom sell them for 2 bucks apiece.

Right now I keep no log. I do mark everytime I smoke a bowl of something to keep track of how much I have left. I should start writing tasting notes next to it.

I keep track of my cellar, but my opinion on the particular blends is stored in my head. It's worked pretty well so far, but whatever works or is fun for you is the way to go.

So you are keeping a kind of running itinerary of your cellar. For the size of some of y'all's cellars this seems almost mandatory. Keeping records would make smoking seem too much like a chore. I have over 200 pounds in my closet, and often do lose things in there but the surprises are fun. I found twelve ounces of Penzance from 2007 in the back of the closet that I had completely forgotten about.

I keep an inventory of all my tobaccos. I use an app called Arborea on my iPhone. I post what I smoke on WAYS. I don’t post everything as sometimes life gets in the way. I really like keep track of my inventory. I can see what’s aging, what I no longer enjoy and what I need to acquire more of.
