Then was great. Yeah, been there, done that. When we got our biggest client, who had a cage at the data center, the previous tadpoles had run the cables like a drunken spider. We had seven racks in front and seven behind, and when Gary and I went over simply to trace the start and end of each cable, it took us two full days. Of course cables had to be run between the racks, where your hands won't even fit, and you can't bump that or 40,000 people go down, and they'd put bundles of cables in tubes, so there was no way we could try and feel our way through to touch fingers, and I had to use a pocket knife to wiggle in there and cut the tubes off.

My old phone is probably still full of pics from jobs. Unbelievable how people could set up a server like that and just leave satisfied with their work. You ever work with old telephone machines and stuff? I went to a place downtown in a sky scraper with an entire wall covered in 110 and 66 blocks with about 10000 unlabeled wires and they just told me to "map it out". I was crawling between floors and in ceilings for two weeks. Pointless. I'm getting heartburn just thinking about it. hahaha |
