Sitting here trying to decide what kind of wood finish to use.
The options are use a wood stain then seal with Poly. Then there is Salad Bowl finish, Butcher block finish. Or should it be Tung Oil, Teak Oil, Danish oil(natural), Shellac or Boiled Linseed oil.
The Salad Bowl and Butcher block finished have to be reapplied over time.

Very nice John, If you plan on making them for sale, a couple variations that might be nice is to make the tamper holder accept the Czech pipe tool since it is so commonly used, and making a cradle to hold a pipe in the middle...a person could still dry tobacco underneath. The only problem with all the variation of pipe bowls and stems, I don't know if there is a possibility of a one size fits all could be done.
I say all this from the mindset of a trucker looking to use double stick velcro so I can mount it up on the dash, I would probably mount it in reality on my floor mounted stereo system though to keep the vulcanite more out of the Arizona sun.
Pretty nice, I am definitely interested.

Keep it natural and use butcher block food grade , don’t forget it’s a tobacco drying tray as well. Your finish may effect the tobacco!?!?!? Once every other month you can re-treat the wood.

Certainly salad bowls and butcher blocks look great. I could see that effect working here too.

To make an adjustment to hold a Czech tool is no problem., I personally don't care for them because of the way my hands work. As for a cradle to hold a pipe it is in the works looking for an idea that can be easily reproduced.

Just to give an idea of its size the base is 9" square. The recess is 6" diameter and between 0.375" and 0.5" deep. I used a Zippo for this one. The Pipe cleaner holder 2"x1" ,drilled to 0.625"x1.75"

Nicely done. Simple, convenient and beautiful. Personally, I vote for a butcher block finish. If you'll be using it to cut plugs, ropes and such, no need to go to the trouble of poly finishes and whatnot because it's going to get scored anyway.

Not sure you want tung oil on that sweet piece of practical...I think the tung oil might affect the tobacco adversely...using a poly would leave you with a blotched surface after tobacco sits in it for a while. I think I would leave the bowl part untouched as I don't know what would really work with tobacco oils and such staining the inside. I use a small (3"X3"X3/4") block of wood to cut my plugs and ropes on...easy and out of the way.

Wow, that's the most practical thing I've ever seen.
I'm thinking an entrepreneurial person could earn a fair bit of tobacco money making those.
Just saying.

I used a small bolt to attach one to the side of a tin that I use as an ashtray. Works very well.

I was going to make a couple and show them to the pipe club, to get their input. This one is a proto type. From the response this far it seems as if it may be doable.

For my purposes in a big truck, a pipe might rest on a leather loop to 3rd or 4th gear then the pipe would be on the floor underfoot...I was thinking of something with walls on the side of the bowl...maybe even a bit higher than this. The maker: www.uapac.com/antique/accessories/novelties/magnetic-pipe-holder.htmlThey are available all over, I guess I could just attach a small magnet on the wood.

Czech tool would be good, as well as the lighter cut out accepting Corona and Kiribi lighters. But, I think that is a great design overall. I do like the idea of a pipe rest being incorporated.
Yes, I want one. :-)
What kind of time do you have in something like that?

There is a grippy plastic pipe rest made to stick on the dash or console, and it has a fairly significant side wall and a deep enough texture to keep a pipe from sliding.

My wife bought the honeycomb grippy liner that I use in my toolbox at Big lots and the 99 cent store for a fraction of the cost of Sears...pliable and I would bet most good glues would work.

It comes with double sided tape as its meant for the dash or whatever. Its not serious tape and the material is one with fairly good bonding properties. Edit: They're on smokingpipes for 7 and change.
