Hi ,
Its true I have been infected by visiting this forum,I got the pad and tad.....So I'm thinking I need to build a pipe stand for my work shop.I figured someone here might be able to provide a couple of measurements.I don't have a stand to copy off of and I can't tell from pictures online the distance between pipes and the height of the stem holder area.
I'm looking for center to center measurements for the bowl and stem holders. I want to build a 2 or 3 level stand with a section for nosewarmers or shorties.
I think I will build it out of scraps I got in my shop, some pallets or maybe some redwood pickets,so nothing fancy and it doesn't have to be perfect....once I have a few measurements I will be able to adjust or modify as necessary
I only have a few pipes now but the wish list is growing.
Any help and suggestions are appreciated

I built 2 not too long ago but I cant remember the spacing. I want to say I went 2 1/2" center to center but I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure you'll have your answers before I get off, but if not, I'll check when I get home.

I just happened to have a pipe rack full of pipes and a ruler at the desk where I am sitting. The distance between the indentations where the bowls sit is 2 1/4 inches. This accommodates pots and some fairly large bowl pipes. But just to be on the safe side, I would go with Josh's 2 1/2 inches.

I have one important suggestion: make your stem-holders with a U-shaped "channel" instead of a hole. I have several factory made pipe racks, and the "channel" design is both easier to use and much more flexible.
In fact I am about to experiment with converting a couple of cheap Decatur "hole"-style racks to match my Dunhill "channel"-style racks. I think a coping saw and some sandpaper should take care of it.
If the experiment fails, I'll I'm out is a couple of $5 Decatur 4-hole racks. But if it succeeds, I've turned a $5 pipe rack into a proper pipe rack.

I purchased a couple of old Decatur style 6 pipe racks from 'the bay', three pipes to a side, and the holes restrict the size of pipe that will fit the rack. Cutting the holes to slots will cure that problem, or as Smellthehatfirst says, I'll be hunting a proper pipe rack!

I just got home and checked and I went 2 1/4" center to center. The spots for my bowls to sit is 1 1/8" diameter.

For bigger pipes...I just measured a 15 pipe stand...was 3" center to center with 3 1/2" to the top of the pipe rest. Hope that helps more than confuses.

I got the framing done and bottom bowl holder, which is part of the frame. Unfortunately I did crack the wood in a couple of spots even with pre drilling. Some of this wood is pretty old and brittle. You won't be able to see it because of where the rack will be located, and it is in my workshop where I get very few 2 legged visitors.I was going for the elcheapo supreme rustic look so the cracks add to the distressed look.I custom sized it because initially I was going to wall mount it,but I have too many other things on the wall already..... so I made it to fit in my Unistrut desk between the top 2 tiers.I wanted to keep it up high because I didn't want to come home and find my dogs using my pipes and smoking up all my tobacco...

Hey...at least you'll have someone to smoke with...just keep them outta the Lat Flakes...they will be ordering on-line with your credit card.

Well here it is...Looks like I need some more pipes. Looks like you worked out the dimensions very successfully! I would want to sand and wax the parts that come in contact with the pipe very finely, though. Briar is pretty hard stuff, but the wax finish over briar tends to be quite soft, as does Vulcanite. The "rough" finish is attractive, but I don't want to scratch my pipes.

P.S. my coping saw and sandpaper experiment with el-cheapo decatur racks was mostly successful.
The "cups" are placed directly underneath the channels, so the angle isn't ideal... but it does work, and it's easier to finagle than the "hole" style.

Looks great!
My son is insisting on buying a nice 75 pipe rack with a glass door, there is a nice one in the east coast with provenance dating back to the 1800’s at a brick and mortar auction house, but the quoted shipping price far exceeds the opening bid. 😕

Good job on the pipe rack. I'd say it won't be long before you're making another one for the excess pipes you've acquired.

Nice work there. I like the look. With my limited wood skills and tools, that is a rack I might be able to pull off.

I found this 24 spot rack at an antique store today....not what I was looking for, but the price was right. We will see how she does with the curved stems after the scratch cover dries, I may modify the stem rests into channels if it doesn't work.
