Another beautiful pipe Jason. Once I get these next commissions done, I'm gonna play around with diamond shanks. Your bulldog request is still in my R&D queue, but I'll get there!

Finished this commission the other day. Two more to finish before I can move on to a few others. I'm doing them in batches. The other two current ones are well on their way to be done. That is just nice, very nice. ๐

I love it, beautiful work. My "gnarly" Bones made me love slightly flawed briar. It reminds me of myself, so it fits thanks, Josh. you know, I feel the same way about wood. I like to see the imperfections. Especially in briar. I mean, if you're lucky to get a flawless piece of briar, that's great. But, inherently, briar is craggy, misshapen, and full of flaws. Sometimes I feel like covering them up is a disservice to the true nature of the wood. I could see the other side of that argument, and say that fills and covering blemishes are like putting a nice suit on it, but I hate wearing suits, because that's not me. That's me selling myself as a proper fellow. That said, I did fill this particular fault, but only because I couldn't tell if it was a fingernail of wood about to pop off. And, in this case, it's mine, and I was mending a broken leg, not gussying it up. That's one nice pipe. And I agree. That grain is way too nice to blast or rusticate. As long as it feels good in hand I don't mind exposed blemishes at all. If anything they add character.

Thanks, sperrytops for being the impetus in creating this one. It was a fun one to do, and gave me a good challenge. These commissions have all made me grow very quickly. Thank you to everyone who has taken a chance on me, and given me the opportunity to do my best. I've enjoyed every minute of it.

So are we calling them JB pipes or Cramptholomew pipes?

I just received my new JB (Cramptholomew) pipe in the mail, and it is a beauty. Heavily rusticated billiard with a reddish tan stain. But why should I try and describe it when I can just post pictures: Thanks, Cramptholomew for a beautiful pipe. Is that blue Cumberland or acrylic?

Acrylic, I believe. Cramptholomew can answer.

That's what I'm calling my company, but for now I'm stamping them JB, which is my first and last initial. That said, they should remain affectionately named "Cramp Pipes" here on The Patch. That stem is actually Juma - which is a material used for knife scales and gun grips. It's a polymer, and (gulp) FDA food safe. The hardness is about equivalent to Ebonite. It's wonderful stuff.

Okay, I know Juma. It's a thermoset plastic like bakelite, epoxy, and polyester that can lose its shine over time but no oxidation issues. Can be quite brittle when machined too. I've seen a couple of Scottie Piersel pipes with Juma stems.

I've seen a couple of Scottie Piersel pipes with Juma stems. yes, no oxidation. I haven't had a problem machining it. In fact, it cuts like butter. So much nicer to work with than both ebonite or acrylic. I just got a big chunk of jet black Juma for stem making. It buffs up splendidly, and if it DOES lose shine, you won't have to tear through layers of oxidized rubber to get it back to Sunday-go-to-meeting status.

With my experience working with Juma on a few knives I made in the past Iโve come to the conclusion......itโs durable, easy to work with and makes for some stunning knife handle scales. If it loses itโs luster, Juma buffs up easily by hand with Carnauba or a Flitz type wax.

That Juma looks good. I'm not a fan of that blue with that stain, but I can see where many would like it. Great job.
