So I tried some cob modification at the weekend. I took pics along the way. It was a good and bad experience at the same time... I started with a legend and rather than poke at it with the dremel, I covered it in Pollyfila (Spackle to you??? The stuff that you use to fill cracks in walls and holes from nails etc.) Then I painted it black. But I noticed the Pollyfila was brittle. One tiny knock and the 'peaks' would break off and exposed the white underneath. So I decided to sand it down with the dremel... After that, I painted it with varnish.... It looks much better, but it's still a bit brittle. I may need to redo adding the varnish to the Polyfila or using wood filler instead (which I had, but found out had dried out). Anyway - you live and learn. I like the look though.

Looks pretty cool but thinking you should have left it white until after Christmas.

Paddy, do you find that the spackle that you used stops or hinders the absorption -ability of the corn cob?
When I painted mine black , like you did, I noticed that as I smoked it the corn kernels had a tendency to separate from each other on the cob leaving some minute gaps in the pipe texture...noting that I couldn't fix with another blast of spray paint.

You just painted it though, didn't you? When I did my original one I rusticated it with my dremel, so I didn't notice any gaps. With the spackle I think it will hide that even more. On the absorption, I would have thought that's taking place inside the bowl. π€·π»ββοΈ

I have a tendency of smoking a hot pipe and have been known to burn thru a Legend in under 30 smokes. I burn thru Legends like you burn thru underwear......your wife told me......lmaoππ€ͺπ€ͺπππ

Paddy, if you are burning through underwear, you might want to ease back on the hot sauce. Just sayin'...

Paddy, if you are burning through underwear, you might want to ease back on the hot sauce. Just sayin'... Lol. My heartburn has been raising its head since I had the hot sauce. So, take 2... I mixed some of the varnish with the spackle. Now it's a brownish colour. Only problem was it was diluted and was much harder to get into wee peaks. I've a feeling in the morning the peaks I did manage will have flattened. Wood filler is probably the best way to go.

Take 3 - I mixed a couple of drops of food colouring into the spackle - that gave the same brown colour but didn't dilute the spackle down. Worked much better. Leaving it to dry before painting, sanding and varnishing.

A fellow on another forum coated a cob with honey and burned it with a propane torch a few years back.

I might try the same thing with a Mark Twain, but extend the diameter of the bowl. The thicker sides of the Twain will give a little room for human error.

Leaving it to dry before painting, sanding and varnishing. try adding the epoxy to the Spackle! Not sure how that would affect dry time, but it should harden it pretty well.

Paddy, just stain a Cob with black or brown leather dye and brush on 30 minute epoxy resin with a cheap disposable hobby brush. Keep a hair dryer nearby to remove any bubbles, also evens out the finish. The time is well worth the outcome ππ
