On Thursday the 15th mgtarheel, JimInks, Lonecoyote, and myself all met for lunch at Gypsy’s Shiney Diner here in Cary, NC for a lunch. We also had the pleasure of Jim’s wife joining us. They came to celebrate my 70th birthday. The food was very good but the comaraderie was in rare form.
In addition to the beautiful birthday card Jim’s wife made for me (she did some amazing work, very professional.), I received five tins of tobacco, Andullo, Blockade Runner, Tudor Castle, White Knight, and BlackHouse. I got more tobacco such as Peretti’s Thanksgiving Blend, Mick McQuaid Plug, plus several samples of Wilke’s soon to be released blends: Royal Scot, 10 Downing Street, #193, #176, and Shipmate. Also got a generous sample of Macedonia I from Argentina. To top off their generosity I received a carved Edward’s straight stem Dublin # 784. Like all Edward’s it’s a superb smoker. The fun didn’t stop at the Diner.
After eating we all went over to The Tobacconist of Cary, also know as The Pipe and Leaf, a local B&M that has some very comfortable chairs.
During our our time there we laughed, joked, and razzed each other unmercifully. Many stories were told and Jim entertained us with a story about one of his old flames, a very very large gal that never shaved her legs, arm pits, had an aversion to the use of deodorant and bathing more than once in a lifetime. Whether true or not I can’t say but that’s the description I remember and Jim seemed so sincere. Just my opinion but I think he still regrets that she broke it off because he wouldn’t share any of his 3 Nuns Tobacco with her. One or two stories that were told may have been very slightly exaggerated. Others were out and out lies.
We were there at the B&M 2-2 1/2 hours laughing until our sides hurt and enjoying our discussions about pipes and tobacco. I can’t remember another day in recent years where I had so much fun and enjoying the company of such good friends.
Ted, Mike and Jim, I sincerely appreciate all the gifts but I treasure the fact that all of you came and gave part of yourselves to me in such a way that that my heart is warmed each time I remember looking at each of you as you were smiling and laughing. I believe everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Thanks guys, it was a great day, one that I will remember for the rest of my life.
BTW Jim, you still owe me two tins of Rotary.
