I used to poke fun at a friend of mine who collected ceramic tea pots. She has since passed on and i cannot apologize to her.
I find myself collecting ceramic tobacco jars.
Comoy's or Aonian or similar. With tri-pronged lid lock, and good rubber around the lid.
See the thing is I use them. I love using them. My most smoked blends are all in jars, because of the fun of it. Billy Budd Blonde, of course, Viprati, Rimboche S.J., CULT Abacus, Carter Hall. ... I make these hanging tags. It looks allright. Looks pretty cool.
Must not have a picture of something else on the jar. I like designs that go with the shape of the jar, but a picture of a winning poker hand, or of a dog, or a picture of a pipe, it will irritate me. I don't like letters or words all that much either. A friend of mine got me a large white jar with AMPHORA on the side, no rubber, no clamp. I don't much like it but my friend meant well, and I suppose I need to get it out every time he comes over. Life gets so complicated.
I think I am putting several people on Etsy through college or at least paying for their kids braces. So next I suppose i will need a display shelf for my jars (where did I get all these jars, my gosh).
This is ridiculous.
But sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.
Regarding how well the tobacco keeps, I find it is not really an issue, because (wait for it) I go through tobacco pretty fast. I have yet to have any of my ceramic jarred tobacco dry out perceptibly. Nothing lasts a year. Not even six months.
Long term a mason jar is better. I do not disagree. I will let you know when I have some blend hanging around long term.
And don't ask me why I want to display jars but don't want to display pipes. I can't tell you. Call me crazy.

jeffd Ok, your crazy My dad had a couple of ceramic type of jars, and all he use to keep in them was Granger pipe tobacco. The long term storage deal was never an issue, because he would go through it in no time (or I should say burn through it). After he passed back in 2005, and later, after placing mom in to a bed and board facility in 2014, my wife and I spent some time cleaning out their storage lockers, garage, and home. I could never locate those jars again and always wondered what had become of them. And, that's life...

Had my Comoy ceramic tobacco jar for over 50 years...found the need to drop the damn thing when I was cleaning a shelf...now it is just glued pieces...but it worked for a very long time. Kept the tobacco for many months at a time. Some aro was left in it for 2 years...was still smokable when I opened it up. Jeff...was yours like this one?

I've thought about dabbling in the Dunhill clamp Jars. I've have a couple of Dunhill "apothecary" Jars and wood humidor on display and am always looking for more. Figural Jars are the most valuable and collectible. The Blue Delft jars have a following. This modern Delft jar I keep at hand is dated in the late 70's I think. It's inscribed with the date but I'm away from home. It has a big ceramic disc under the lid but I just keep the tobacco in a plastic bag.

Nothing wrong with that, jeffd... We all have our quirks - nobody is in a place to judge. But I would also like to see photos.

I've got two or three of them myself that I use, but don't have room to start collecting them. Nothing wrong with collecting stuff if you've got space to display them.

I bought my first tobacco jar a few weeks ago at the WCPS. Frankly, I would not have bought it but for the fact that it was from the kind folks at Kramer's. I never made it to their store before they closed, but I have a piece of tobacco history.

Though they are mostly a decorative piece ( no rubber sealing b'tween lid and jar) a white ceramic Dunhill jar is a MUST for a ceramic jar collector. They are not made any more (remember Dunhill is out of the 'baccy buidness! ) but they came in 3 sizes with the largest usually found as a decorative item at tobacco shops years ago. I have one of the medium sizes I got about 30 years ago at the old Dunhill store in NYC.

I have one of the older 60's "block" era version Jars in the collection. These are very rare and even harder to get without a broken/repaired finial. The smaller jar is a numbered BAT "script" era European Ltd edition.

I feel your pain. I never wanted to be a pipe smoker or much less a collector but now I are one! I guess the universe just wanted me to be a pipe smoker and collector. I only wish she hadn't waited so long to tell me cuz this is fun!

Outside of searching eBay and etsy, any other places I should look?

I have a bunch in a box. I used to display them but they got pushed out by all the pipes and tobaccos. Someone asked me for a picture but I forgot about it. If I get rid of them the buyer will have to take them all which will be a fraction of what I paid. Most all are Stoke on Trent or whatever.

Nothing weird about collecting tobacco jars. I've looked at them on eBay and like them, but never started acquiring them. I looked for a Dunhill jar a while back, but never ran across one in good condition at a reasonable price, so eventually stopped. I don't really have room to display a collection of jars if I did have one.

I have several ceramic spice (or coffee?) jars that my wife gave me and I use for tobacco. They are fantastic. These are the wide mouth jars with the heavy rubber seals and metal clamps on the side for keeping things fresh. I also use mason jars and I think these ceramics work just as well, and, they are really neat. They take up a bit more space, so I only have a few, and most of my long term tobacco storage is in mason jars. But I love the ceramics and would certainly not hesitate to add more.

I just bought a new side table next to the chair I tend to smoke in, and I have one of those Comoy's doggy pipe holders. It reminds me of Lonnie-Dog. Now, I want a nice vintage tobacco jar to keep an OTC in it for when I want a simple smoke. Maybe I'll keep SWR Aromatic in it.

Thank you, Paddy. I don't have much to work with, but I try, nevertheless.
