Greetings from the land of fruits and nuts!
Started with a gifted pipe in college, smoked for a few years, then laid them up. A few years ago I unearthed a box full of pretty nice pipes I had collected 40 years or more ago. Some Barlings, Iwan Ries, Wilke, Barclay-Rex, a Pete, couple of meerschaums with no name (or case, long gone), and a few others. From that start I've gathered in 80 or so more over the last five years.
I used to smoke Burlington Arcade, made by Harry S Tint and Sons in Philadelphia, but they were sold long ago, and the tobacco discontinued. I'm pretty much an English/Balkan fan, and have tried probably 40 or so blends in that camp, plus another few dozen of VA's, VaPers and a few crossover blends. Favorites are many more than just those listed. I'd be blessed to find a bit of the Burlington Arcade to sample for old times' sake.
I am interested in some of the more semi-scientific aspects of pipe smoking, such as the right moisture level for a given tobacco and how to achieve that. How to clean pipes efficiently. How to combat silly notions that abound in this pastime.
Having been retired for some time, I now play golf a lot, read, some photography, some travel, watch a ton of sports. My favorite team on earth now is Tottenham Hotspurs.
My given name is John, and in college I went by "Johnny Mac" and a few other handles.

Welcome to the Forum, Johnny Mac! I moved from Hollister to Arizona in 2005, Prior to that I lived in the Bay area...when I lived there, Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills, Spyglass, and The Lodge at PB were customers I serviced regularly in the foodservice business...I miss Phil's Fish market in Moss Landing...and I am a fan of Steinbeck. Wouldn't it be cool to smoke a few bowls in Doc Rickett's lab on Cannery Row? I hope that it is still preserved, even though it was never opened for the public. I saw Clint a few times at his establishments, Hogsbreath and Mission Ranch...but as a supplier it would have been unprofessional to approach him as a fan..I did give him the thumbs up though. Glad to see that the Carmel Pipe Shop is still going. www.carmelpipeshop.com/pipesSay hi to Doris Day for me!

Yo mac
Welcome from near Philly. What is your handle on other forums? I think we've talked about Burlington Arcade a few times. I get out to the Bay Area a few times a year and I need to take a visit down to that Carmel Pipe Shop sometime.

Thank you for all the welcome notes!
I forgot to add that when I lived near Sacramento, my go-to shop was- and is- called The Briar Patch! Before that, in the near Bay Area of SF, it was Piedmont Tobacconist, Steve Richman, proprietor. Now it's Carmel Pipe Shop. I visit all of them when I can.

Over the years, I've frequented The Piedmont Tobacconist and Telford's in Mill Valley. Planning a trip to Carmel Pipe Shop in the near future. I have visited The Briar Patch when traveling through the Sacramento area.... heard that it has closed.
