I just found out I am going to NYC Thursday and will be coming home Saturday morning. Are there any smoke shops that anyone recommends? I'll be in Manhattan around Times square and lower Manhattan around Chinatown for most of my visit. I'm staying in Secaucus NJ and taking the bus into the city.

IMO Davidoff has the better free lounge but Nat Sherman is also in Mid Town. Barclay Rex is near Wall Street. If you want to pay for a seat I've been to The Carnagie Cigar Bar in Mid Town and the SOHO Cigar Bar. I'm not sure but I think the roof top lounges are probably closed for the season.

I recommend Barclay Rex. They’ve got a nice lounge downstairs and a good staff. The Davidoff lounge/store isn’t bad either. I just miss the days when that space was occupied by De La Concha.

I'll have to try and give both a visit. I'll have some time to kill Thursday night and Friday I'll have the whole day to kill. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you plan on visiting The Memorial to 9/11, ( Old World Trade Centers site), it's an easy subway ride from mid town. And then an easy walk to Barclay Rex. A real treat for me is to have lunch at Delmonico's, also in the area.

When I found out De La Concha was no more, I was very disappointed, especially given their pipe tobacco offerings. At the time I frequented NYC, Davidoff already had a shop. In exchange for De La Concha, NYC now has another overpriced Davidoff store.

But I could never understand why their cigars prices are as high as they are. I have to admit I love their mini cigarillos.

They are a high end lifestyle label so their prices go with the territory (though their pipe tobacco blends are not too badly priced.). Coming into NYC, I expected to pay higher prices on pipe and cigar tobacco. When my old local had products for substantially less, I often decided to go with what I brought. There were two shops however that were more competitive than the others, Midtown Cigars(formerly the JR Cigar shop) and De La Concha. These are the stores that I frequented most and purchased the majority of my cigars and pipe tobacco, respectively. Not to mention De La Concha had their own unique pipe blends that I could not acquire elsewhere. PS I also bought pipe tobacco and cigars from Nat Sherman, Barclay Rex ,Davidoff on one or two occasions.

Just got back from NYC and had a great time. I did get to visit Davidoff and Barclay Rex. Stopped in to Davidoff after going to Rockefeller center and the gentleman working there was really cool. Picked up a tin each of the red and green blend. Went down to WTC memorial and made my way to Barclay Rex. What a great staff, Helped out selecting 8 of their blends of 2 oz. each and picked up a nice little straight handmade acorn,(needed to replace my Ropp straight apple that I broke the stem on). They threw in a copy of pipes and tobacco magazine and around 15 packs of matches. I will be back there the next time I'm there. Thanks for the reccomendation's really worth the stop.

The old De La Concha doesn't stock a whole lot

They're selling new-old-stock made by the current owner's grandfather for $50 a pop. The newest ones would be from the 1960s, using Algerian briar.
They were never stamped because the old man would just go down to the basement and crank out pipes all day, whenever he was annoyed. (Which seems to have been a frequent condition.) It was someone else's job to stamp them.
I have a perfect straight grain billiard that, yes, I paid $50 for. You don't get wood like that anymore.

I was with my son and he just goes a hundred miles an hour and I have to reel him every few minutes. Had a knee replaced and am having trouble with the hips now. It's so much fun getting old.
