If you want to be able to fit stems to any pipe, you Really need a small lathe. The tenon tool used in a drill press is a colossal PITA and you are likely to screw up More tenons than not. Besides, the stem OD always needs to be turned to match the shanks. A triangular machinist's scraper is great for removing the flashing. I have a lathe and a mill. That tenon tool looked like it was a purpose made tool though... I was going to chuck it up in the Mill, secure the stem, and use it that way. I'll have to research more, chucking up the stem in the lathe might prove to be troublesome if the stem has a large bend to it

If a stem has a bend, one just straightens it with heat. Tapered stems are problematic, so the usual way is to select a drill bit the exact dia. Of the tenon draft hole, chuck the bit in the tailstock chuck, slide the stem over it, and drive the stem from the headstock chuck with a cut off flat screwdriver blade chucked up and the flat inserted in the stem slot. Major problem with the tenon tools is thst it's a pain to center the stem under it and gripping tapered or odd shapes is awkward in the table vise.

I meant a stem that is supposed to be curved :-) tapered stems I could chuck up easily, just have to use some tapered blocks in the jaws, shouldn't need much force to hold it alll together ;-)

You could use tapered blocks, but you'll need various sizes and they have be internally tapered on center and concentric with the OD. The above approach is quicker you'll find.

Ha 1984, a buddy and I went to an estate sale the son of a CT Legislator was holding here in ME on one of dad’s houses, the other is a camp up Maine. Dad passed in 1966 and the son, no 20 something mind you was getting around to selling the contents so he could sell the house.
My cohort in vintage tackle who specializes in wooden baits, older fly reels, much older than where I hover, not afraid of glass rods etc where I stick basically to bamboo fly rods and era reels and accessories. Long story short we made him an offer on the entire tackle line even though some items held no interest to us, he’s furiously penciling in information as we talk then when we figure he was calculating if we were making a fair offer he tells us he had 4 dealers coming to appraise and look at the stuff, after 3 hours with the guy we were miffed.
Two days later my cohort calls me from work and asks if I could grab enough cash and head back the guy was accepting our offer so I agreed and called to let him know I was coming. When I get there things were being thrown around and I could tell the guy was pissed so I thread lightly and knocked on the garage door. He see’s me and he smiles and asks me to come in. I inquired if everything was ok and he pretty much bad mouthed the lot of dealers that came as they offered him less for the entire contents of stuff he had for less than we offered for the tackle. For our honest assessment he gave me 3 tins filled with hand tied flies from a famous CT tackle shop some ended up extremely valuable.
We did very well selling the stuff taking our time and only offering things slowly, this was 7 years ago and he hasn’t called us back about going up to camp where dad kept the good stuff! Procrastination takes many forms and it never ceases to amaze me. banjo

I'd love to know more of the story behind this man and his shop.
