By the way, Rhodes, you've got a great tobacconist in the Milwaukee area called Uhle's. If you'd like to try a really good Burley that sings in an MM Cob, try the Blend 00 ... good stuff! If the former Book World stores up north survived under new ownership. They might have Uhle's Tobacco. As of a few Christmas' ago the former Book World in Marshfield still had the Uhle's supplied pipes, cigars and tobacco.

Try this method of packing that was taught to be by a man of about 90 years some time ago: Thoroughly rub out about a bowls worth of tobacco so that theres no big chunks or tobacco veins or any debris. Next take your cleaned pipe and lightly sprinkle all of the tobacco in the bowl, letting it naturally fill up. Don't do any 1-2-3 clumping method, try this, to the letter, instead. When the bowl looks like it needs a haircut, LIGHTLY TAMP IT DOWN. KEYWORd: LIGHTLY. Now repeat the sprinkling of the tobacco until it looks full, but not overfull, and tamper until theres some space of briar between the tobacco and the rim of your bowl. When you light, pay special attention that all of the top portion of the the tobacco is evenly lit. Take smooth, but steady draws. Develop a rhythm that keeps your pipe tobacco lit. Each tobacco is different and requires a different level of smoking "attention". If the tobacco swells up when you light it, tamp it down lightly while taking small draws, so that it will stay lit. If it goes out while doing this, or if it goes out mid-smoke, tamp and relight. Don't bother dumping out ash until you're done with your pipe. I hope this helps you. I've smoked this way since I was up on a mountain and some old codger asked why I was doing so many relights. He chuckled a bit and said I smoke "fancy English" tobacco, too.

That works for me too.
