I had a motorcycle rider that seemed to be pacing me parallel to my drive axles in 115 degree heat as I was grossing 80k the other day. He looked as if he had been riding awhile, but he sure lacked basic common sense. 105 PSI recap busting loose will certainly up the pucker factor for a motorcyclist. I stay as far away from big trucks as possible. Not just the danger but the noise. He must have been on his iPhone.

Yeah ... that's not smart! My philosophy is if I can't see their eyes make contact then they don't see me. Especially true for intersections and driveways.

I used to avoid the big trucks as well - they throw sh!t at you, but the most dangerous thing for me was always old people. They would look you in the eye, stare at you approaching them the whole time, then pull out right in front of you.
Driving fast properly, whether on a bike or in a car, is all about safety. When you know how to control your ride, and are paying perfect attention, you can up the speed and still maintain a greater safety margin than some moron in his SUV yapping away while doing 85.
Driving fast properly is not reckless, driving 55 and not paying attention is.

Not a philosophy; objective demonstrable fact.

Don't know why I haven't posted in this thread before, but I have had a few bikes over the years. Mostly older British bikes (Norton & BSA). I currently have a '74 BMW R90/6, an '01 Ducati ST4, and my first and favorite; a 1969 Norton Commando. It was originally an "S", but has morphed into more of an interstate model for better distance and touring.

I miss riding. I've always liked the "naked streetfighter" types, though I've had an assortment:
Multiple dirtbikes (KX125) (2) Suzuki SV650 CBR600 F4i Honda Magna Triumph Speed Triple
When I lived in Houston, it wasn't far to the "twisties" in the hill country. A lot of fun. Had many a close call and when my son was born, I decided it was time to be done.
My best trip was one I took with my dad, I was on the CBR600 and he was on a 929. We rode west from Houston, took the coastal up California, over through the redwoods, and on to Portland, OR. On the way back, we cut more of straight line and hit the Rockies. Beautiful ride.

It depends on where you are in Houston. From Humble to Fredericksburg, it's not close at all. And with the current traffic plus all the construction makes it no longer worth it. From Austin to San Antonio to Fredericksburg it's all houses as far as you can see, interrupted every so often buy a pop up faux French winery. We've rode the 3 sisters many times but I doubt that we'll be doing it again. Last year my nephew was hit head on on 16 by a BMW passing a Corvette on a blind curve. He will never be the same.

I’m a BMW guy. Been riding them since the early 70’s. As close as I can can figure I’ve put close to 300,000 on various bikes I’ve owned since my first R75/5. My current ride is a R80/7 with a Texas Sidecar. Have done many long trips on that rig. Have pretty much given up two wheels. Balance issues and the fact I can load the sidecar with all the junk I find I now need to tour with. I still ride Airheads, simple because I know how to work on every inch of the motorcycle. Hope that those that still ride are safe and enjoying every mile that passes under your tires!!!!

Love airheads. I had a R69 back in the early 70s. I ride a Goldwing trike now.

I've put quite a few miles on my '74 R90/6. It was my main touring bike for years. I ended up going with a newer bike primarily for more modern brakes.

I drove a six wheel ATV here for years with no brakes. Just planned ahead. Gary Quiller had no brakes in his 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood. Ditto. He daid now but used to cruise to the bar on the Plaza here frequently. Sometimes he just drove in! Big double front doors. Seriously, modern disc brakes front and rear with hydraulics are a blessing. My old Norton Commando, drum and shoe front and rear. You do not really expect me to stop, do you? Ditto the R60/5 but that seldom went over 60 MPH.

I mostly just slow down. The trike has dual disc's and dual drums. It'll stop faster than I can keep myself in the seat.

Yeah, I tend to travel back roads and am fine there, but occasionally have to hit the super slab. People tend to bunch up and drive too close in many areas. It never fails that if I try to leave enough room to stop on the Norton or BMW, someone pulls in and I have to hit the breakdown lane when they inevitably slam on their brakes.

When we were in New Hampshire there was a motorcycle rally and they were backed up for a mile going into Conway.

It was probably Laconia Bike week, the oldest motorcycle rally in the Country. Lots of people sitting, 'stylin, and profilin' on their bikes. I'm about 30 miles from the epicenter of the event, and tend to avoid riding during the rally as it does pretty much become a parking lot. I do try to get out to the vintage races at the NHMS in Lauden and the hillclimbs at Gunstock. They used to close off and race the streets of Laconia, but stopped it a number of years. ago. That was fun to watch.

We were staying at a friend's house in Maine and driving around looking at the adjacent states. It was in August, about 20 years ago.

I am new to the forum. I have an 06 Springer Classic, an 07 Streetglide and last month I bought a 2021 BMW R18 Classic. I have been riding for 40 years, all on Harleys, until now. I was a Harley Mechanic for 7 years. The dealership went out of business, so I started working at a BMW/ Ducati and multi brand metric bike shop. I was thinking of getting a new Road King, when BMW offered incentives for the R18. They allowed me to put 200 miles on it to make it a demo bike. That took a couple thousand off Msrp, then the customer rebate, then employee rebate all together took 9700.00 off the bike. So I went for it. The downfall to the R18 is you need a special BMW jack to service it and valve check/adjustment is at every 6 k. Maybe they will raise the mileage for valve checks in the future. It comes stock with a 21 inch windshield that should be at least 24 inches. Here in the cold North East, wearing a full face you experience extreme wind buffeting that distorts your vision. The only solution is a BMW short windshield at 16 inches. It would keep the wind off your torso. Harley had perfect height windshields, at nose level. At this point the BMW has been out for a year and no one makes a full exhaust, eliminating the cats.
