Yea, I noticed that. I'm not 100% sure. I think it might be sycamore. I did a search and some smoking pipes have been made out of sycamore. There is a food-smoking guide which says that sycamore is poisonous for smoking food, but there would be tons and tons of smoke produced from smoking food, whereas the smoke from a pipe is 99% the tobacco and minimal from the pipe itself. On top of that a minimal amount will be ingested so I think I'll be safe enough. Like I said, I'm not sure how often I'll use this pipe, but I wanted to see if I could.
The danger isn't straight-up toxicity, it's allergic reaction.
Woodworkers publish guides on "safe" and "unsafe" woods because repeated exposure to the allergen can cause a massive reaction where previously there was none.
Your exposure may also be greater than you imagine. Cobs are cured for two years to remove as much moisture as possible. Briar is boiled and then cured for ten years or more, to remove both moisture and also various unpleasant chemical contents natural to the plant. Your wood wasn't cured at all. Even if it was already dead, it's just been sitting outside in the rain. Everything that was in the living tree is still in the dead wood hunk.
I appreciate that. The branch was cut recently. It stayed on a radiator for a few weeks to dry it, but it's probably still very green. When I tried it, I filled the bowl to the top and lit the middle of the tobacco in an attempt to reduce the exposure of the ember to the sides of the bowl, and I only smoked it for about 2 minutes. During drilling and sanding I reckon I would have been exposed to more allergens than those 2 minutes of smoking, but I don't want to take any chances. I wouldn't buy a block of briar simply because I wouldn't have the skill to turn it into a pipe. I got lucky with this one. But if I hadn't got lucky, I wouldn't have lost money in the process.

Looks a bit like a carved potato. For an Irish pipe, seems appropriate.

Paddy, don't deprecate your pipe. It looks as good as many a freehand I've seen.

I believe European cherry trees, Prunus avium, are native to Ireland. Perhaps you could find cherry scraps to experiment with.

Following the theory that at its most fundamental, a pipe is a hunk of something, usually wood, with two intersecting holes, you definitely have a pipe there. And given you can fit a stem in one hole and pack tobacco in the other, you have a smoking pipe, that frankly doesn't look any stranger than many we've seen. Very good job!

Great job, looks like Maple to me..... from what I found, sycamore is also called sycamore maple. Sycamore Maple is in the Maple family. Sycamore trees are in the plane tree family......Trees are named weirdly ...there is a tree called a Willow Oak, it's in the Oak family....has nothing to do with Willow trees. If I had a nickle for all the Sycamore and Sycamore Maple trees I climbed over the years I'ed be a rich man......

I'd need to lop off a good chunk to make anything with it.

Your still alive and have not passed on I wonder how long does it take for Sycamore to be lethal. Be afraid very afraid like a teenager in a Halloween movie. I read the story of Zacchaeus very interesting.

Those who are talking about exposure. I would think that after regular use the pipe would become seasoned. A light coating of tar and tobacco would shield the smoker from potential irritants in the wood. Maybe I'm way off here, but I don't know.

I also wondered would it be worth charring the bowl a bit with a match.

Good work Paddy! Toxic or not, It's art, maybe not to your wife, but still an accomplishment. As well as a fulfilling experience. I made one out of black walnut, another questionable wood species for pipes. When I finally get the stem I envision, I will share my creation with the patch. Smokable or not it's cool looking and made by my hands, so I'm proud of it.
looking forward to seeing the next one!

I'm still not sure how toxic it really is. Perhaps I should smoke it until I die and see how long that takes. I accidentally made it able to take a 6mm filter, so that'll prolong my death by a few days, I'm sure.
