Now is a good time to try them as P&C is having a sale on all pouched pipe tobacco. You again! Good thing my wife put the kibosh on spending until Friday. Also, for some reason I don't get all of these sale emails. I'm signed up for them, but they must not like me. I don't blame them. Maybe your wife's filtered them so they go straight to trash.

Now is a good time to try them as P&C is having a sale on all pouched pipe tobacco. I saw that! So I'm definitely going to pick up an assortment pouches. Carter Hall seems to be the most mentioned, so I will try that one, as well as a few of the other varieties, with the exception of Captain Black Grape

Grab yourself some Velvet, I love the stuff. Let some dry out for about an hour and then pack it up.

One thing about Carter Hall. It is so easy to smoke. Not in the least fiddly. Lights first or second time, smokes to the bottom.
Tastes good enough to repeat. And doesn't stink up the room. And its so available. I don't buy it on line as I get it when I go to any place that sells tobacco, just to give them business without offending myself.

I smoke a good bit of Half&Half during the week. Since it has been manufactured by the STG the taste is nearer to the old blend by the American Tobacco Co. When Pinkerton bought the blend back in the 60s it had an awful chemical taste that I found very disagreeable. Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sutliff’s Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match are other favorites that I enjoy. As others have said, pick up a pouch of each blend and give them a try. Take your time and if possible smoke the entire pouch before coming to a decision. This will give you a chance to come to a well considered decision.

Capt Black white pouch...the original is my all time favorite otc blend. You might try Sir Walter REGULAR, Carter Hall etc. But try a full pouch of the Captain first. There is a reason why it has been a favorite for years. Then move to something else. Inexpensive OTC does not mean bad. And your wallet will let you acquire another pipe.

Captain Black Copper is one of the blends that I ordered. Tr below you will find a link to the reviews. www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/9754/lane-limited-captain-black-copperI use reviews not so much for the stars given, but to examine the tobaccos smoking characteristics. If you enjoy Burley blends and do not mind a light topping, this might a blend you will enjoy.

Sir Walter Raleigh: Original and Aromatic are great as far as basic baccy goes. Slightly nutty- tastes like cocoa wheats cereal to me. Just a great tobacco to carry around with a cob. If you spill the pouch on a hike, who cares.
Lane Limited Ready Rubbed- Another terrific pouch of burley, much in common with SWR.
Carter hall Great tobacco for the price. Natural flavours with a mild sugar cookie aftertaste. Hard to find anyone who openly hates this tobacco for what it is.
Captain Black- I've honestly enjoyed every blend I've tried. Easy smoking and very flavourful. I love Copper and Original. Royal and Gold are great if you just want smooth, sweet Cavendish, but can be boring if you are looking for depth Or Nicotine.
Also, quite enjoyed Casey Jones: Last Ride and I would place it somewhere between Captain Original and Copper.
The Super Value line of blends are easily worth their price- Even the English. Not the best English, but it puts John Bull to shame.
Amphora: Original, Full, and Yellow are all great smokes. In fact, they are quality tobaccos and are really only a bargain because you aren't paying for a tin. Same could really be said about Captain Black and Casey Jones.
Most other American OTCs I have tried to date destroyed my sinuses and the roof of my mouth. Something about their casing is caustic to me.
As far as European OTCs other than Amphora, I have only had Cest La Vie, John Bull, and Erin Go Bragh. All had there ups and downs. For the most part, I'd buy them as emergency smoke, but I bet you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who championed one of these blends as their favourite.
Everyone is different though. You may hate them all.

SWRA is one of my favorite "I want a pipe but dont know what blend" blends. I'd say buy a pouch of each and if you dont like them you're only out a couple bucks. I'll second that!
I do the same thing with Captain when I am in an Aro mood. Kind of like how Pabst is my default lager and Guinness is my default stout.

One note I will make concerns the two "English" blends mentioned. John Bull is light on the Latakia but to my palate unique to the light "English" market being more Burley forward. I find it to be more dynamic than Super Value English, though granted the later is a bit more traditional and favors Latakia more than John Bull.

Something about John Bull reminded me of the seasoning Liquid Smoke. It was a cool burning blend though and my favourite of the three Euro OTCs I tried.

Thank you. This is a very informative overview. I've ordered several of these blends from Pipes and Cigars as they are on sale, and, eventually, I will get around to trying more. We are very lucky to have such an enormous variety of blends to choose from.

I have a tub of Carter Hall in the cellar. It's an enjoyable smoke and worked great for breaking in new pipes with half bowls.

The British OTCs are a whole different kettle of fish than what we get here. I guess the tastes and preferences of old-timers buying their tobacco down at the grocery store are just that different.
- Gold Block - a rather ordinary VA blend with a sweet, gentle topping. (OK that sounds kind of familiar doesn't it?)
- Clan - I didn't care for this at all. An almost American-style aromatic with a very peculiar room note.
- Condor - a bold VA/Burley blend with a topping that's subtle like a 2x4 to the head. I can't tell you what Condor tastes like. It's too complicated. There's any number of floral things going on and I swear, a kiss of wintergreen.
- St Bruno -- another big, round blend, VA and Kentucky, I think, with an extremely assertive topping. As with Condor, the flavor is hard to put your finger on. Unlike Condor, I really like St Bruno. In my book this is "Condor, but better"
There used to be others, but these are the only four you can reliably get anymore. And out of that list, only two are typically sold in the U.S.

For sure. Remember to stock up on what you love. Any day things could change and as people are fond of saying on the forum, "Tobacco will never be cheaper than it is today" (unless you pay attention to P&C sales and specials) haha

The problem with most OTC blends, especially when speaking of aromatics, is when the topping is gone, you're generally left with unimpressive tobacco.

I would add Supervalue Bourbon Whisky* to the list.
* comes in pouch only, the 12 oz. bag labeled Whiskey Cavendish is another blend entirely.

I like quite a few OTC blends, but I just cannot smoke Half & Half. I don't know what the topping is but to me it just smells and tastes foul. YMMV.

Captain Black Royal was my first ever pipe tobacco. Mac Baren 7 Seas Gold was my second. Haven't purchased either one in a while. Graduated to more complex blends since then, but wouldn't rule out smoking either one given the chance.

The problem with most OTC blends, especially when speaking of aromatics, is when the topping is gone, you're generally left with unimpressive tobacco. Well, that's why I like some OTCs and loathe others. The British-style aromatics tend to have exciting underlying tobacco blends, so you don't dump the bowl after the topping burns off.
Carter Hall and Prince Albert have gentle toppings and simple, satisfying VA/Burley mixtures underneath, for the same reason.

For me OTC tobacco is a spring and summer tobacco best enjoyed in my cobs after yard work etc. Carter hall is hit or miss with me, in a briar, yuck, in a cob 1 out of two bowls are great, but no one is mentioning the best OTC ever. Granger. Hands down. Bowl after bowl, it never disappoints, totally the best cob tobacco ever, so good at the end of the day it will give you goosebumps. Smooth mellow easy smoking tobacco with no bite, so good you can inhale it. That being said it sucks. Don’t buy it. If you buy all my granger I’ll hunt you down and make you smoke my poo poo.

Out of all the OTC blends, I like Carter Hall and Half & Half best. The topping on Half & Half really appeals to me, but I can't figure out what it is. I totally agree with this. I would add Sir Walter Raleigh as a third choice. AJ
