I like Penzance, Margate, and Stonehaven and have all three cellared, but I've never paid the outrageous prices for them or any other tobacco for that matter. There are too many other options. I will say that, IMHO, there is something special about Esoterica Tobacciana and Gawith Hoggarth tobaccos.

I haven't been smoking Lat blends much lately, so I thought I'd return to them with a bang and have a bowl of Penzance. Unless you're a Latakia-phobe, I really can't imagine how someone could not enjoy this stuff. No, I wouldn't pay over retail for it, and I enjoy other Lat blends just as much - but it really is a top-notch blend.

I smoke mostly English, and also like Penzance, though Margate is what I have in stock. Love it.

I'm in your camp. Plenty of good lat blends for less money and available 5 lbs at a time. There's a LOT of truth in that post, fly boy

I had a tin of Penzance maybe 15 years ago. Smoked it, enjoyed it... didn't go hunting for more. If I'd known how difficult it would become to find, maybe I would have. What I'd love to find again is a tin of And So to Bed. That was what an old-school tobacconist in a small town in Door County, WI gave me 20 years ago when he decided I should try a real English. Back then, I enjoyed it a lot more than Penzance... it would be fun to see if that's still true. Il keep my eyes open. Seems all their blends are excellent quality. Can't say I'd pay stupid prices for em either.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I've only been at this a year but didn't Penz make a big splash when it came out? And continued to have a healthy following long before iht became so hard to get?

I've sold off most of my Esoterica blends but, of course, I've saved "a few" just for the heck of it... Margate, Penzance, And So to Bed still fondly remembered.

I still have some Esoterica including And So to Bed, Dunbar and Dorchester; however, all the others are history. Good stuff but I have accumulated waaaaaay more tobacco on hand than I'll ever smoke and that was as good a place to start thinning the herd as any.

I don't know about a big splash, but it certainly had a loyal following. It just wasn't the object of obsession that it has since become, and certainly would not have sold for more than retail.

Cool beans. What cranks your engine? C&D Engine 99 , Byzantium, Arango Balkan Supreme, HH ODF. My B&M is going to get some Arango Balkan Supreme in for me per your suggestion.

Ok, so a while back I posted up my utter lack of excitement for some Penzance. I was told that I hadn't tried it enough or that I needed to give it sometime....you know, the usual rigamarole, so I have now officially gone through an entire tin and smoked it in briars, meers, clays, and cobs. I honestly still don't see what the hype is other than fake manufactured price manipulation due to the scarcity alone of the production. Now, don't get me wrong, it IS smooth smoking, cool flavored, and not palate destroying or anything like that. I just don't get the wow factor from it. I wouldn't turn it down if someone was offering it up for free, or at retail prices (only to resell on eBay of course at a profit ), but I would rather spend my time and effort on getting other blends cellared wide and deep at market prices than chasing after a unicorn that tastes like chicken. Just my $0.02 now that I've worked through an entire tin. As always, YMMV, but there it is. Meh. Yeah I'd save the money on it personally and get some Gaslight. Some say there's no comparison and maybe there isn't but they're in the same vein and as one is extinct and the other still roams the earth "freely" .
