Been reading posts out here for over a year before I started posting myself. And only now just realized there was an introduce yourself page. I'm late 60's, semi retired (still work some), live in Northern California, Sierra foothills halfway between Sacramento and Reno, Nevada. Smoked a pipe since the 70's, when I was introduced to it by my Dad. The original Tinder Box in Santa Monica was a haunt of mine. Going in there was always like going into a pipe smokers Disneyland. I have about 25 pipes now, all collected over the years, with the nicest ones being gifts from my wife.
I have briar and meerschaums; actually finding myself smoking the meerschaums more and more often these days. I enjoy dark fired, Virginia blends, English blends (with a healthy dose of Latakia), and a very limited number of aromatics. My favorite aromatics are the seasonal blends from Straus Tobacconist in Louisville, Kentucky: Sleepy Hollow and Wenceslaus. Otherwise the only aromatics I pick up are the much less sweet European aromatics (John Aylesbury, Reiner and Sillems, for example). My favorite tobaccos are MacBarons HH Old Dark Fired and some of the Cornell & Diehl/GL Pease English blends with heavy Latakia. I love flakes. Did I say I love flakes? I like Dunhill Flake - sad to see it go.
I have really enjoyed chatting with you all and reading everybody's postings. This community is fantastic and I'm glad I started participating.

Yo sperr - welcome. When I'm up that way, I usually keep zipping up the mountain to Truckee so as to go educate the trouts. Next time, I'll make some time to share a bowl or three.

Welcome to the forum Perry, I am familiar with your neck of the woods, my brother lived in Yuba City, Uncle in Penn Valley, and I trucked resources to support CDF and USDF during fire season. I lived in the Bay Area and later down towards Monterey... I finally had my fill with California governance, and got out in 2005.... Penn Valley is pretty nice... someone here mentioned they live in Sackatomatoes... Dr Don reference...  Maybe you can meet up at the Briar patch tobacco shop someday. |
