In the city where I grew up there was a B&M that offered great blends, good pipes, a cigar humidor and very professional pipe repair. About 12 years ago, I went back to visit family and went in there looking for some of his bulks. The owner I knew developed health problems and had sold the shop. The new owner sat reading the newspaper, said he lnew nothing about pipes, and didn't seem too anxious to talk. I purchased several tins of Dunhill blends and a nice Parker quarter bent bulldog for half what they were worth. All of his remaining pipe and tobacco stock was marked at half off. I would have bought more, but his manner was rude and impatient. My brother, who also smoked pipes, was with me. He asked a question and was told he would have to ask elsewhere as the owner knew nothing about pipes and wasn't interested in learning. I'm sure by now, his business is gone. I just hope someone with good business sense purchased the shop.

An internet search will tell you what you need to know. I don’t mean to sound like a smartass... but that comment usually means that is where one goes.
Have you checked, Yelp, Google, etc...?

One more reason Boston is the best place to live. (Aside from Vienna. Vienna is amazing.)

Just bring up Google and enter the name of that B&M followed by the name of the town and followed by the abbreviation of the state (do not use any comma's in-between the the b/m name, city, and state). A bunch of information should pop-up on the status of your B&M For example, type: cigar chapel bend oregon and hit enter...

It's sad that these things happen.

I didn't think you were being a smartass, trailboss. I appreciated the suggestion and wanted to slap myself for not thinking of it. Anyway, I took your suggestion. That store is not listed, nor is anything else for that address. Again, thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah....this thread could easily merge into the thread "Do B&M's deserve to survive?" thread...obviously the last owner had no business doing retail. Time moves on and I understand the original owner needing to retire, it is sad that the business has to go to the hands of such a schlump. If I worked as a tobacconist, as long as I was moving ahead, every day would be a good day. As Amazon has showed Sears and Walmart, you really need to be thinking ahead...a modern day tobacconist should really think about diversification...I am glad that us guys in Arizona still live in a place that allows the proprietor the freedom to do so. I wish everyone else had the same benefit.

My earlier comment was predicated on the fact that earlier in the day, a consignee came up to me and the first words he said:
"Hey...I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but..."
i stopped him by saying, "Speak no further, because you are telling me that you are getting ready to be an asshole."
It went down hill from there, he called dispatch...but my dispatcher told the consignee that my observation was spot on.
Trying to avoid hypocrisy....

In my experience, everything that precedes the “but” is negated by the “but”. Your observation was indeed spot on and in my opinion, diplomatic.

Sadly almost all retail is going in the same direction. Amazon (smoking Pipes) effect. Can you really expect someone making $8 an hour to learn everything about the store he works part time in? On the other hand, Most of the B&Ms in my area are pretty good. Family owned and run businesses.

On the other hand, Most of the B&Ms in my area are pretty good. Family owned and run businesses. $8 per hour or $4 per hour...if you agree to work for them wages, you should do to the best of your abilities...and the proprietor has a lot riding on having employees that don't drive him into insolvency....but to the point, from the OP: This guy had no business running a business. Having said all that Gav, it is pretty cool that you have great tobacconists in your area...seems to be a rarity.
