I am finding that I really don't enjoy VaPers as much as I did several years ago when I first tried them. It seems that VaPers and Virginias are the hardest on my nose and palate of all the blends I smoke. I can smoke a good English, Balkan or Oriental almost any time and they never bight or irritate me. I have been noticing that Virginias sometimes sting me or irritate my tongue as well as my sinuses. They almost always make me sneeze or have the urge to. This wasn't the case before. Not sure what has changed, but it is discouraging. I love the smell of a good Virginia or VaPer in the tin and in the air. Maybe it is a changing body pH thing? The AJ's VaPer I had recently was peppery enough to cause the sneezing urge. It was delicious, however. My tongue felt a little scorched the day after, though.

Is this with new and/or aged?
Perique always tickles me and sits with me OK at best. I do better with a blend that is light in its use. I do the best with blends I have stoved. It really mellows it out to where my body chemistry can mix with it better.
So just an idea, maybe try stoving some?

Maybe this is a good reason to cellar just a little wider then you would think, just in case something like this happens and all you've got in your cellar is the one type of tobacco.
Sorry to hear that vaPers aren't agreeing with you. Could it be the time of the year?

I’m finding I’m feeling the same right now. Starting to think it’s the time of year. Maybe winter does throw our Ph off. And maybe we eat differently during the cold months and that has an effect on ourtastes. Chances are Don and I will return in the spring and summer.

I have always been sensitive to straight VAs, especially red VAs (my favorite). Even if I'm very careful, I tend to scorch my tongue. If there is burley or perique in the blend, I don't usually have a problem. I'm pretty sure it's pH. Seems like some folks are sensitive to VAs and others to burleys.

Seems like it can vary for me even with the same blend, from one day to the next. On several occasions, I have had to just set a pipe full of VA or VaPer down early and try to finish it later. I usually just switch over to a Balkan or Burley aromatic when that happens. If it gets any worse or is consistently a problem, I will probably unload a lot of blends. Life is too short.

Have you tried smoking VaPers in filter pipes? I couldn't tolerate them at all until I used a 9mm charcoal, which I think filters out the sneezy, tingly stuff.

I've never been a fan of heavy Perique blends of any kind. I can tolerate little in the blend for some spiciness, but I much prefer Orientals over Perique.

I have never liked vapers. But I feel bad for them when their pipe blow their faces off. 😁😉 I also can't stand Escudo and I am pretty sure that it's the perique that does it. I bought an ounce of blending perique to isolate the flavor. I really, really didn't like that.

One’s taste when it comes to types of pipe tobacco will change from time to time. I can go through a period where I don’t enjoy most English blends. After a few months I start to crave them once again.
I can not smoke any Virginia unless it has a number of years of aging. Bites me severely almost immediately. After 4 plus years I can enjoy a straight Virginia with no tongue bite, even a Carolina red.....which is extremely tasty 👍👍👍
I agree with Chico, use a filter when smoking a VaPer. For me it’s much more enjoyable.
Ron, Escudo has changed drastically over the years, the newer releases from 2016 on I no longer smoke. My opinion, poor quality Perique.

Good point Randy, it’s a combination of the filter under the bowl and the metal shank that cools down the Perique......JMHO

With Virginias I've found that even 6 months of aging improves a blend significantly.

I think you're all right about body chemistry etc. I have loved them from the start, but I have had to deal with a raw tongue from time to time. I used to date a girl whose saliva was so acidic, that gum she chewed for too long would fall apart. My chewing gum always gets dense like rubber before I toss it. There have to be different reactions for something like smoke, right? Burley was horrible to me at first, then once a few good Burley blends 'did it' for me, it's like my mind decided it was good and entire flavour profiles opened up for me. Like with Scotch for the first few times or even broccoli. So I find myself moving away from VaPer blends more because I have an insatiable new craving for Burley.
As a new piper with a predominately fresh cellar, I can't wait to pop, say a tin of that Four year old Escudo I got from AJ a few years from now and see what that experience brings. If I had to guess, I'll be Burley'd out and that wonderful VA will drag me back to the other end of the spectrum once again. haha

Some of my VaPers are several years old. I don't have any straight Virginias that are more than a couple. I don't think it is the Perique that bothers me, but I guess it could be. Jury is out on that one, but you may be on to something. OGC never bothers me. It either has minimal Perique or none, depending on who you ask.

Mmmm Virginia's. I like all Virginia's, but reds are what do it for me. I'm glad I dont get tongue bite because I think I'd just have to suffer through it. Hopefully whatever is causing the issue for you comes to a halt. Some Burleys destroy my mouth

Sorry to hear that vaPers aren't agreeing with you. Could it be the time of the year? I have a pretty wide cellar Paddy. Lots of everything. I realized a couple of years ago that I loved Latakia and Orientals, so I have plenty of blends featuring those. I put away a lot of Virginia and VaPer blends too. Burleys are a recent fascination for me. Of course, I also have a smattering of light aromatics and even a few Lakelands. So if I decide to divest myself of some of my VaPers or Virginias, it will not be a big deal. I would probably let it get even more age on it.

I only have two Savinellis that take the 6mm balsa filter, and they are dedicated to latakia blends. I do have a bunch of Vauen 9mm filters. Guess I need a 9mm filter pipe.

I gravitated towards blends with dark fired Kentucky which seem cooler to me yet still have a nice flavor.

I don't care for Vapers that are extra spicey. All the rest go down smooth for me as do all Virginias. The funny thing is certain Burley's will aggravate the hell out of me including heartburn. I guess it just shows you never know. Stick with "The Grape" and all will be well.

Had some Heinrich's Curly Block tonight and it did not bother me. It has been sitting for a while, was somewhat dry and from what I can tell is not too heavy on Perique compared to some other VaPers I have. Man does that stuff burn like coal. I more or less cube cut it and rubbed it out a little. It was wonderful.

Some Virginias and many Aromatics will burn my tongue. It is usually because the tobacco needs to be dried a bit, but I am impatient so I very often use a pipe that can accommodate a filter. A good many of my pipes are filtered pipes but I favor those that accept the 9mm charcoal filter. With the use of these I never have tongue bite. I believe most tongue bite is due to the steam that comes from tobacco that is too moist, however, in some cases, it may be a result of one’s body reaction to its own chemistry.
Over the many years that I have smoked a pipe I have discovered my taste for any given genre of tobacco waxes, wanes, and waxes again. A few years ago I smoked mostly Lakeland blends but then I lost interest in the genre for several years. This year I am back to enjoying Lakeland blends again. My desire for Aromatics is waning. Stick to smoking what you like at the present and eventually you’ll return to the blends you once loved.

I love Vapers. Who doesn't like a sweet Virginia with a little spice? Add Burley to round it out a little.

I have a similar experience to lonecoyote. My enjoyment of different flavor profiles tends to cycle, so I'll be enjoying latakia and then all of a sudden it does nothing for me for a while. Same with some VA and VaPer blends, certain aros, my homemade hummus with olives, plated Scotch, Nicaraguan cigars...
