I have been smoking some 2013 Christmas Cheer the last few days and I rub out the broken flakes to open up the flavor and to facilitate loading my pipe. It’s a laborious process that after a while brings frustration due to my lack of patience. I have an old blender I use to rub out flakes with ease. I just dump in the flakes, give them a few pulses and “blipity-bloop,” the results are a perfectly rubbed out flakes that are loaded into my squeeze tobacco pouch. When I want to smoke a bowl of that tobacco I just hold the opening of the pouch over my pipe bowl, give a squeeze, and the tobacco falls out into the bowl requiring a little tamp with my thumb. After lighting I sit back and enjoy a delicious smoke without any frustration.
Anyone else ever use a blender or similar device to rub out their flakes?
AJ

I have a cheap coffee grinder - two or three quick zaps and ready to smoke.

Since I only smoke one flake in a regular basis, OGS, I usually only rub out what I need for one bowl. The coffee/spice grinder idea works well but for me it works best for a couple of bowls worth IMHO !

I have never tried it, but over the past year here in the 'Patch, I've read good things about the method. May have to give it a go.

I have been selling some off some of my cherished blends of tobacco including some McClelland blends. Proof positive that I lack 38 cents of having a quarter but I’m not becoming frustrated rubbing out Flake tobacco with stiff super sensitive pain-racked fingers. AJ

Years ago I purchased a new small coffee grinder at a garage sale for $5.00. Use it often to break down some difficult Flake blends that don’t rub out easy using my fingers. Only grind enough for a few bowls at a time, this way it stays fresh in a small jar or a small Tupperware container. Works well for me👌👍👍

I have a coffee grinder in my shop but I only use it occasionally, usually I just use a hand held grinder.I usually grind out 2 bowls worth and set it on a tin lid to air dry.Depending on the tobacco I will sometimes grind it the night before and let it air dry overnight. My experience is burn rate is stabilized for less relights and the flavor is more enhanced.I find that some tobacco that is loadable out of the tin or jar is still better when run through my hand grinder.

I've always thought about using the blender but, then I'd have to clean the dadburn thing afterwards. So instead of making more work for myself I just rub it out the ole fashion way.........with my Hands.

Well, as AJ knows since he told me about it...I use a cheap, small coffee grinder that I got at a thrift shop for $5.00...never have to clean it out except just blowing the dust out....also use a hand grinder as you would find in a "head shop"...also works wonders but takes a bit more work..the difference is that you get larger pieces with the hand grinder. Both work well!!!

Both work well!!! Well, My palette is a little more apt to taste what ever the last tobacco was in the grinder just from the oils left behind thus forcing me to clean anything I use to grind with. I'm sure most won't even sense a difference but, I've been cursed with over sensitive taste and smelling apparatuses if nothing else very different ones. Heck, if I put cologne or aftershave on even 4-5 hours before I load my pipe and don't wash my hands thoroughly afterwards my tobacco taste like I'm smoking Lakelands and I'm not a fan.

I use a simple two-piece hand-held herb grinder... works very similarly to a black pepper table grinder. Just load the desired amount of shag, flakes, or coins and give a few twists and turns until a perfect shred is achieved. Then, if needed, let dry. It's all a pretty simple stress-free procedure that takes very little effort or time... 100% effective.

No blender for me. I enjoy the time it takes to prepare the flakes for smoking. It's part of the relaxation for me. I'm not an all day smoker so I don't rub out a lot of bowls. I average maybe 4 bowls a day and don't smoke flake or cake everyday.

I prefer flakes over ribbon or shag. I don't mind rubbing them out, it's kind of a zen thing for me. I don't fold, I do rub out. I only have difficulty with some of he cakes that are more like bricks. Then I gotta pull out the old knife.

It seems as reasonable as most of the other things we do to have a fire burning in front of our faces. I have used a hammer to break up some Bayou Bleu.

A hand grinder or a cheap coffee grinder work great and I quite enjoy using them. I get a pretty even product over all.
I grind up about an ounce or two at a time and put it in a small mason jar. I use a small camera bag to hold six blends, a dozen or so pipes, lighters, pipe cleaners and more. Just makes it easier as I step outside to my little smoking area.

Ever since I read about using a coffee grinder my flake smoking experience has improved exponentially.
I also grind some coarser cuts out ready rubbed..

That's a good blend, and good advice for preparation. Can't say I've done the same, but I like the flavor.

I use a chef's knife and mince my coarse flakes.

I go between being a folder and rubbing it out. I mean I am not literally a folder or a rubber but a human being who sometimes folds and rubs. That is to say most of the time I am human though other times my wife says I am an alien. Not to be confused with other aliens, I am a US citizen who folds and rubs and have a wife who thinks I am an alien at least part of the time.
PS I do not use a blender or coffee grinder except when I try to communicate to the home world.😁

I never tried that technique.
Mostly, I smoke flakes and coins and just fold and stuff.

If I know I won’t smoke the entire tin within a week or so I place the tobacco into a Mason Jar until I am ready to smoke more of that blend. AJ
