I mainly use Macbaren Pipe Cleaners. They do the job most of time and are certainly better than the old habit of using an old goose feather for the job (Cleanliness and durability aside.) For curved pipes I find they scrape the sides of the inside and sometimes have a hard time reducing the buildup of the grime especially the goop that hardens on the bottom of the bowl. For this, I bend the pipe cleaner in half and spin it around the bowl vigorously and blow out the end with a tissue to get the dust. I use the Bristle first and then the regular for a very dirty pipe. Occasional I'll split the pipe and clear it from the inside which is probably the best way to get the worst pipes out aside from using a liquid solution. As far as scraping the inside with the wire in the bristle, It's kind of like scratching the chalkboard and probably creates more crevices for gunk to attach to. Aromatics really stick all over the pipe with all the sugars and are hard to remove.
I mainly clean a pipe when I find it has started to smoke poorly and I'm getting bubbling in the bowl. Nothing is worse than the liquid that forms because the air flow is not efficient. I find this to be a pain in the arse and surely there must be a less painless way of cleaning a pipe. Anything with a stinger or filter seems to make the problem "worse". So What's the best way and what might be a better solution?

For occasional deep cleaning, I prefer the nylon bristle stem and shank brush with everclear. Regular pipe cleaners work at wicking moisture through the smoke, and cleaning after the smoke, but for deep cleaning, I need something more aggressive .
The wired bristle cleaners may be fine on a beater pipe, but I have read where people claimed they had done damage, especially in the shank.

I use the BJ Long regular cleaners...use them after every pipe...keeps them clean and ready for the next time. Pipes always ready for use...no smell in the house from nasty uncleaned pipes.

I use a pipe cleaner after every bowl. I run it through the stem, both ways, then into the shank and make a crank shape and rotate loads. Then I double it up and go at the bowl. Seems to work for me.

I use a regular tapered cleaner after each bowl to remove moisture. I use BJ Long Tapered Bristle cleaners followed by a regular cleaner after every 3rd or 4th bowl. Never have a sour or bad tasting pipe.

I also use Longs cleaners both plain and bristled. Use the plain mainly when finished with a bowl, put one in, let it stay there for at least 30 min then pull out and let the air do the rest. Use the bristled when doing my monthly deep clean of that months rotation. Don't be stingy with 'em as they contribute greatly to a pipes good health !

I use BJ Longs, and they work great, I have also used Dills with satisfactory results. I have some used some Savinelli cleaners with less than satisfactory results, leaving more of the pipe cleaner in my pipe rather than out when I used them.

I like Dill's for travel. They seem a little shorter than my other cleaners and seem to fit my rolls without the ends getting bent and I like the nice little box. I keep them everywhere, from camp to the glove box.
Also like using Blitz at home for more serious cleaning.

The title of this thread suddenly got me thinking about a service in the fashion of knife sharpeners of old, traveling town to town sharpening whatever people brought out.
Sadly, would not be a sustainable business model as there just aren’t enough of us in this day and age. But it would be a great way to get to know other members of the FotL.
Anyway, just the weird left turn my brain took reading the title.

They've got a truck that goes around picking up knives, scissors, and all manner of blades from restaurants and such.

BJ Longs here as well. Every variety. Bristled for cleaning estates and monthly cleanings for my car pipes. Normal for routine use.
My home pipes get the bowl wiped out after every smoke and a pipe cleaner left in them for an hour or so.
I keep plenty of all of them on hand. A pack or 2 normally gets added to every order.

I used the cheap pipe cleaners you buy in the kids art section you get a pack of 100 for two or three bucks and they are a foot long they never leave any lint they clean absolutely perfect and they fit nice and easy through biter bits
