I just spent 10 minutes opening a pint Ball* jar. One of the insults of aging is less strength in hands and wrists. I had to pry the rim (top & bottom) with a flat blade electricians knife, and poked two holes in the top lid with an ice pick. Removal was aided by a square of rubberrized shelf liner, that I wrap around the lid for a better grip. There must be a better way than my crude solution, so please pipe in if you have encountered this problem.
* sure kept the year old tobacco fresh.

They make jar openers but they are not cheap Pampered Chef #2677.

I have diminished hand strength from my peak, because I am old and I broke my right wrist twice in a year. I can still open 99 out of 100 jars, but I can see the writing on the wall. I have a shop full of tools that should get me through to the baby food phase.

We're all going there. Giving a lid a good knock with something solid around the rim helps....

My mom has serious arthritis and has other sorts of issues with her hands. She would have trouble opening even loosely closed jars on her bad days. I purchased this set of openers from Harbor Freight for her and she absolutely loves them. m.harborfreight.com/2-pc-rubber-strap-wrench-set-69373.html?utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20providedKnowing how bad her hand strength is and how painful normal tasks are for her, I was glad to find something that helped. If these openers helped her, I feel confident they'll help most people who have trouble opening jars and bottles. And you really can't beat the price.

There is some old trick about turning the jar upside down, but I forget the procedure. Boiling water might help. Yes, we're all going there... some of us are there already.

5 years ago I got bit by fire ants that caused my immune system to attack the nerves in my arms and legs and killed 95% of them. The nerves tell the muscles what to do, so I lost about 70% of my muscles in those areas. I went from physically being a 58 year old to a 90+ year old in 6 months. I cannot pull apart a zip lock bag, open a bottle of water or tobacco tin. Get one of the plastic V shaped opener devices, as the v section is on the bottom side and fits small to large caps, the handle will give you leverage. As Betty Davis said, " getting old is not for sissies "

I just throw the jar at the nearest wall. Works every time.

Sharp taps with a wooden kitchen knife handle around the lid works here.

Yep to what others have said. One of the strap type tools makes it a snap. If your in a pinch and store your tobacco in your bedroom closet like I do (or happen to be wearing a belt) you can use a leather belt quite effectively.

Here're the strap type of openers. But I recall a gizmo from 60 years ago. It was a wall mounted can opener, with a V-shaped folding arm that you could use to easily open a lid. Even one handed. I don't care for the strap, as you still need strength in one hand to hold the jar from turning. Sorry I have no idea when/where/if such are made/sold today. I've a few more years before I need same.

My mother used to put the lid under the faucet with the hot water running, then take a butter knife, the back edge, and tap the top edge of the lid all around then use her rubber jar opening pad and voila - opened jar. I do it today and it works for me as it did for her !

I suffer from the same malady - old age. I use a fork and push it up between jar and lid to break the seal. Always works. Same as using a knife blade.

"Breaking the seal" on the lid seems to be a helpful step. Posts here have people using knives, forks, hot water, etc. Those all seem like good ideas.
I don't think this has been mentioned: I've seen folks tap the lid on the edge of the kitchen counter while slowly turning the jar/bottle in their hands. They turn it while tapping the lid on the counter edge to knock all the way around the top.
I don't know if that works but the people I know who do it, swear by it's benefits in loosening a stubborn lid.

Many years ago I read a book authorized by Ted Williams..He said that he squeezed a rubber ball to increase his hand and wrist strength..Four years ago I had a shoulder replaced. The doctors gave me a rubber ball to squeeze..I don't know if it helps but I do it just in case it does.

And right on a few levels. With her around, no more bleeding the vacuum seal to open a tin. After she put the lid back on, no one else is bowljacking any tobacco.

I can take the American girls like Rachel McLish or Cory Everson. I guess they couldn't compete with that Russian.

The best thing to use to open jars bottles is either a pair of 12" or 18" channel locks. Or a nice 12" pipe wrench.
