I didn't expect much, BUT they we're selling pouches of Five Brothers, Erin Go Bragh, and Carter Hall for $9. They had a tin of 2016 Orlik Golden Mixture for $17. I passed on that, as well. On the upside, they have a TON of estate pipes. Including one HUGE Preben Holm freehand with a crappy replacement stem for $225.

Sounds like he's trying to get caught up on some bills.

I'm going by my B&M tomorrow. I hope it's a good experience this time. The only pouch tobacco I've seen in a store around here is Middletons cherry for $12 and Captain Black Original for $14. Both at Walgreen's. The last time I was in my B&M all they had were cobs and Grabows. Not complaining, I love them both.
How are the prices on the other estates there? 225 with a replacement stem is STEEP

The point being the price point depends on the Preben Holm pipe.

It was kinda in rough shape too, and it looked like someone did a bad job reaming it.

Chances are the pipe is not a higher end Preben Holm. Next time you are there take a picture and note what is stamped on the pipe. As you already know, the condition also plays an important role in determining a proper price.

It could be nicely restored, but technically not the same thing. 225 is still high.

I think the deal is there's a local guy who buys eBay estates, and then "restores" them. By "restore", I mean reams and buffs them. He consigns them to the shop, and that's why there's so many. Literally, I'd bet there's at least 60 pipes. A lot are interesting, but nothing I'd have to have. He puts his last name on the no names.

It is always good to ask at a B&M that has no pipes or pipe tobacco out, to ask if there is anything not out on display.
I have heard on a few occasions that people had asked the question, and out came some old forgotten pipes and tins.

Recommend you guys talk with your tobacconist. I got mine to start stocking pipe tobacco last month. He is now putting in a reorder. Much rather spend with a B&M then online and pay shipping. Funny thing is I work with him on reorders and I'm blown away that the distributor has stuff that the online retailers sell out in a few hours. Nice to get those tobacs without acting like I'm buying Bruce Springsteen tickets in the 80s.

Good point, acefour. My own experience is that I've never been able to get Esoterica online. The only times I've been able to buy it is at B&Ms. Don't know if its just bad timing on my part, or they distribute more to B&Ms, but I continue to check in with a few B&Ms I know in case they get an order of Esoterica in. And I always order a lot of other tobaccos too, just to let them know I value their presence in the business.

However, pipes can still hold value even with new stems. Exact stem replacements can also be custom ordered, though stem markings can be a bit tricky to replicate and are sometimes hard, if not impossible, to find.
