I think it goes in cycles.
When one is in the "growth" cycle, one tries a bunch of things, branching out from known winners, or jumping out to unexplored territory.
When one is in the "security" cycle, one goes with the comfortable old familiar and lets it do its thing, its wonderful, reliable thing.
The only error, IMO, is to not keep your head in the cycle. To regret not exploring when in security mode, worrying that there might be something better than the current bliss. Or, to be overly disappointed during the growth cycle when some of the options don't seem to be agreeable.
