This HH Dark Fired is the first ready rubbed I've ever tried. I'm wearing out my lighter and my patience trying to keep it lit. It smokes wonderful and tastes wonderful...for about 30 seconds. Then it goes out. I'm gonna have to perfect my packin' technique cuz smokin' a pipe aint supposed to be this much work.

Packing technique is important, but so is moisture level. My recent purchase of ODF bulk was very moist when fresh. I smoked a bowl after air drying for roughly an hour, still a few relighting. This flake smokes best for me on the dry side........YMMV. The rest I jarred for aging.

Ive just come back about an hour later and re-lit it. Its doing better.

+1 on the drying … if you pinch it and it sticks together it's too moist.
Also, a looser pack to start with can sometimes help.

I think I microwaved mine for about 15 seconds. That helped. As did a quick blitz in the coffee grinder.
Just a suggestion...

I had put it in one of Shweeti's empty jelly jars when I got it in the mail. I just opened the lid on the jar and Im going to let it air for a while this evening. That should help. Also, I packed it like I do the Lane BCA, and it was not loose enough.

I couldn't agree more...even living in a dry climate the nuclear option allows a more controlled way of consistently getting it to where I like it...9 seconds in the microwave, not sure of the wattage though. Set it on a paper towel in the microwave....modern chuckwagons do have microwaves, Dewayne?

Does that stink up the microwave? Not at all. Sure as hell get's weird looks at the convenience store though when out on the road. One guy asked me what I was doing in that scenario....I told him that "it was hash that I needed to dry out...kinda cures my nerves when I have a load of hazmat before I headed over the 10 percent grade." The dude was a snotty looking chap.

You can try gently blowing back into the stem. I said gently or you will burn holes in your shirt.

Does that stink up the microwave? Nope, not bad at all. If I’m not in a rush I’ll pre-heat an oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, shut oven off once the tobacco is spread out on a cookie sheet and in the oven. I do this with overly moist bulk tobacco’s before jarring. Just let cool completely before jarring, no mold issues down the road.

If you're smoking ready rubbed, just let a days worth air out overnight before smoking it. Also, as someone noted above, pack it loosely, it'll burn better and you can lightly tamp it throughout your smoke. I use the flake version and its never been too moist. It burns nicely for me. I rub it it out myself some, somewhere between ready rub and broken flake. I also let some dry for a half hour as well, but generally have never had a problem smoking it out of the tin (or bag).

Sometimes ye just have to nukem'... Or pack lighter so oxygen can get to the damp tobacco more freely.

A Pot can help troublesome tobaccos to get with the program.

I never "nuke" a tobacco. I find things taste better "wet," even if they're frustrating to light. If your ODF just doesn't want to catch, I know my checklist is pretty simple: - First, try rubbing that sucker out some more.
Some flakes just won't light at tin moisture without a little massage.
- Second, try changing your lighting method.
I am prone to use a fluid lighter outdoors, for the improved wind performance, but fluid lighters burn pretty cool, and wet tobaccos just won't ever "take" enough to get a really good charring light.
If you have something really "wet" out of the tin, sometimes a butane lighter is a much easier light. Butane is much, much, much hotter than the flame from a fluid lighter or a match.
- Third, and I hate to ever recommend this: you can wait a few days and let the tin dry out naturally. I find this robs me of flavor, so I hate it when it's the ticket to a good light.
I'm very serious about smoking stuff at tin moisture, even Gawith. I feel robbed if I gotta wait it out.

Not a huge fan of drying myself but lots of folks love their crispy flakes claiming they get more flavor.

Does that stink up the microwave? If you've heated up a curry beforehand, you can get curry-flavoured tobacco.
