On the last forum many of us belonged to, and where sparks was the number two guy, we had an area where politics was allowed. You had to sign up to see it. It didn't go well, and is an example of why Justin wants no politics here. It's a good rule. My thought as well.

It seems as if some people either can't help but post a thinly veiled political thread or can't stop themselves from posting little jabs throughout other threads and then get all butt hurt and incredulous when called on it. "Who me?" "I read the thread and don't see any thing political" What a bunch of BS. It has been going on since I joined this forum but lately it has gotten out of hand.
Guess what I didn't watch last night with references to "Mike" Obama? "I watched until I saw Michelle was on it". "I'd tell you what I think of so and so, but I'd get banned" etc etc?
"This isn't a political post but..."
Come on. You know who you are and you know exactly what you are doing.
Knock it off.

Permanent bands work so much better!! I’ve tried the temporary ban from a prior forum I was an admin. The member who was “ temporarily “ banned usually came back with a vengeance....” why me with all the other 💩 going on within this forum. He/she ended up permanently banned within a week of return. Trolls are everywhere. You could be in a crochet forum and somebody is going to lose their mind over new regulations in yarn dyes.

Is it possible to uncheck, for lack of a better term, certain categories? For example, the General Discussion thread where posters can post about anything on their mind. Maybe this would aid in curbing the problems. I only use the recent post page and I see all sorts of threads in there. I guess another option would be to avoid the recent thread page and just browse the pipe related stuff. General Discussion is a great place to start a post.....without going overboard. People have to think before they press that “ reply “ button......just use your heads.....simple👍

I don't care about politics, but I'm pretty passionate about yarn dye regulations.

Seems I missed a few things since I was gone.
I’m glad to hear issues with negative posts are being addressed.
I’ve all but abandoned other forums for similar reasons. The Patch is full of great people and fun informative posts. I hope it stays this way.
If we don’t feed the trolls, they’ll move on.

^^ I like that rule! I lose interest in politics fairly quickly. Most of the time when it starts up I quit reading. Not sure what's worse, politics or pissing contests. you can win a p*ssing contest cant win a political argument

I've been on a small break and just checking in, so I feel I've missed some stuff. I have noticed a few of these though and you're right. This is the literary equivalent of poking a stick through the cage and trying to rile the beast.

Well stated Dave, I’ve noticed just recently a few more regulars and not posting or rarely post. Let’s hope they return and “ NO MORE FEEDING THE TROLLS “!!! If it continues their “ plug “ should be pulled before we lose more good members.

I guess that I'm glad that work has recently been super busy for me and I missed the not fun. sparks - I really appreciate your efforts as I consider this to be my main home for pipe related talk on the Internet.

An anecdote: My best friend and I differ greatly in our political beliefs. IF we end up on a political topic, we take the time to listen to each other's viewpoint. Neither of us tries to debase, demean, or belittle the other for holding those views. We're still best friends, and enjoy each other's company immensely.

When I'm in a pipe forum the only clickbaitable threads for me are the ones pertaining to pipes or tobacco. Whenever they get threadjacked (whatever the direction) I either ignore the digression if it's temporary or stop visiting the thread. Maybe for that reason I've missed the instances of acrimony/controversy that are the subject of this thread. I made the exception this time because it was a moderator's thread. But I must say I was surprised that this was going on. The tornado must have missed my house altogether and never even wakened me.

I’ve seen it, don’t pay attention to it, believe it’s wrong, try not to get involved in it. If it any given time somebody sees that I’m a part of it, please PM me and knock some sense into me. I think I said in our fearless leader’s last thread that at one point in time in most forums, some inmates think they could run the asylum. This has resulted in many great communities circling the drain before finally getting flushed and having many valued members find other homes. I hope this doesn’t happen here
