I encourage all of us @chico ,@walkman , Ronv69 etc. to find out what we can from reliable sources and post a link for other Patch members to see. This site works best, in my opinion, when we support each other while giving solid information, in particular pipe and pipe tobacco knowledge, for the benefit of all. Well, that might break with the pipe forum tradition of baseless rumor-mongering, but I guess it's probably for the best. I think I originally saw the link at PipesMag - I'll try to hunt it down when I have some time. Meanwhile, I heard from a potentially good source who once knew someone who was Mike and Mary's plumber's cousin that McClelland is negotiating to buy Syria and turn it into a Lat-producing superstate! Yes!!!!!

So it isn't impossible! Those heirloom seeds may be tough to get though.

So it isn't impossible! Those heirloom seeds may be tough to get though. Not impossible, but Certainly not easy. For me it is much easier to take some overtime runs and cellar away.

Haha I mean, I'm not going to do it, but someone with some real cash to invest could do it on a larger scale. Imagine being the only supplier of latakia. Maybe we will see something like that in the future.

I'm telling you guys that Matehuala has the perfect dirt for this. And it could be smoked over the leftovers of the agave grown to make tequila. The Texas Hill county has some areas with the right dirt, but they keep planting grapes and then fermenting the juice. As if alcohol hasn't caused more trouble than Latakia. Imagine Texas mesquite and or sage added to the fires. We could completely reinvent the wheel! We have more cedar, sage, and Mesquite than there are pipe smokers for sure. If we only had a pipe smoking farmer in the Fredericksburg area.

We also have a lot of candelilla bush that is used for its wax content. It burns sweet when fresh, and the leftovers from the wax extraction burns pretty good too. A mixture could make some interesting smoke.

This may sound heretical to some, but even if Latakia disappeared tomorrow, as much as I love it, I could be relatively happy smoking nothing but SWRA or Captain Black original. For myself, the ritual of pipe smoking is more important to me than any particular tobacco. That said, I DO have plenty of Latakia and Latakia blends in the cellar... I'm in the the same boat. I am a big fan of Latakia and some of my first tobaccos I smoked were Frog Morton Across the Pond and thankfully I still have a few cans squirreled away. For me the process of pipe smoking and the kinship that comes from it is just as important if not more than whats in your pipe. I know that isn't the main topic here but being a green horn and relatively new to pipe smoking, (just about 3 years now), the new friends I have made and my ever growing interest in pipe history and pipe collecting will always out weigh what kind of tobacco is or isn't available. And Again this is just my personal take and interest. And now that I think about it, I'm still developing my palette for tobaccos, so if Latakia does dry up, I'll just smoke what ever I can get my hands on. But if it does go away would it would suck for sure!

Great, now you’ve let the cat out of the bag and revealed why Mike is really working at the Kansas City Zoo... he's prepping for this by collecting and saving all of the camel dung. 🤪

At the last Columbus Show, I heard Leonard Wurtzel (Lane/STG head) ask Mark Ryan (D&R head) if he was having any trouble finding Cyprian Latakia to buy.

On this weeks Pipesmagazine show, Brian interviewed Pipestud Fallon... interesting information regarding his business.... Steve is worth searching out at the pipe shows, a really nice guy to chat with.

Howdy Gang! First, thank you all for the very kind words. I don't deserve them but you can't have them back. (-: Also, thanks to qmechanics for starting this thread. I think the Latakia issue is certainly one that is of great interest as most of us pipe smokers plant that weed in our pipes either on occasion or regularly. I did release my website blog regarding the latest news concerning the Cyprian Latakia shortage and what the future may hold just yesterday on my website and you can access it here - www.pipestud.com/is-cyprian-latakia-dead-or-alive/Thanks again to all of you on this great forum for the interest, Steve

Great article, thanks for posting. Given the situation, a little cellaring won't hurt.

Based upon this highly educational thread, I'm relieved I've somewhat currently lost my taste for Latakia, have a lifetime supply on hand and it's only a condiment in my regular rotation.

Next on hoarders. People who hoard Latakia. Can't really judge anyone for it. Recently purchased two pounds of straight Latakia for blending.
