Who killed Raymond Rakubian and why is a question which has plagued me these many years.
Every time I watch "D.O.A." I miss the answer.
So, which one of you wise guys has the answer?

I watched it again a few days ago (for the umpteenth time) and finally think that I got the answer. It was the same guy that killed the guy that no one, not even Raymond Chandler, knew who killed him in The Big Sleep, both novel and movie. It was none other than the nefarious Mr. Plot Hole, the wayward child of short-fused script deadline and whiskey-fueled writing creativity. Or it could just be, as his uncle the elder Rakubian (Luther Adler at his most obnoxiously narcissistic) said, well, he just died.

You summoned the "wise guys" so I took that as my definite cue to speak.

Tosh, I watched this movie about two years ago. Wasn’t Raymond Rakubian murdered?? Guess I’ll be watching this movie much closer next time.

Or it could've been that loose cannon psycho played by Neville Brand when he found out that RR was soft in the belly.

According to the movie's entry in the unimpeachable and authoritative source that is wikipedia:
"Halliday and Mrs. Phillips used the investigation of the iridium as a cover for their crime, making it seem that Eugene Phillips had killed himself out of shame. However, when they discovered that there was evidence of his innocence in the notarized bill of sale, Halliday murdered anyone who had knowledge of the bill of sale. Bigelow tracks Halliday down and shoots him to death in an exchange of gunfire."
Raymond Rakubian (aka George Reynolds and Phillips' business associate) had knowledge of the bill of sale, so Halliday killed him.
A comfortable sleep attend you finally, toshtego, after all these years. Wikipedia has delivered you from doubt forever. On this point only, of course. Other questions, such as the meaning of life or what songs the sirens sang, remain shrouded in impenetrable mystery.

I was under the impression that toshtego meant this thread for those who have watched the movie, indeed for those like me who've watched it many times. Otherwise beyond there be spoiler dragons. Oops. Not my fault. Heh heh.

I love film noir. "The good old days" the way they really were. Not so good.

Seems that anyone having knowledge of the Bill of Sale is now at risk. Watch your step!

Ah, but the culprit with the Kill Those Who Know About The Bill Of Sale compulsion is himself dead, so the danger is past (unless the movie is in a loop; we can never rule out the workings of quantum physics). What really makes me wonder is why the actor who played Halliday had an Asian-sounding surname, Ching I believe, him being a noticeably caucasian type? That's the real mystery.

I did.... I am the man. The smoking dick and no one can touch me in my lofty position as the head.... The head of the private police, who are really making headway into the case....😁

That dodge will not protect you. Anyone with knowledge of the bill-of-sale is at risk. You might want to consider a remote start for your car.
