I have an old 305 I got on ebay, and it arrived with a broken stem. The seller doesn't want it back.
I contacted Peterson and they replied: "All the stems are handmade to fit the pipes ,so you will have to send the pipe back to us here in Dublin Ireland to get fitted. It cost € 36.00 plus € 16.00 return postage."
That seems very high to me - around $60 + probably $12 to send it, so I'd be looking at over $70 for a stem. A "new" estate on ebay wouldn't cost that much!
Also, I'm not sure I accept that each stem is custom made for a factory pipe, and needs to be custom fit. So I also hesitate to send it off to a pipe repair person to do that work. I believe I just need a replacement stem.
Anyone know where I can find one?

To add to this, I'd like to replace the stem for a Peterson 150. Any ideas?
Thanks

I'd recommend Norwoods to both of you. A standard stem is no problem for them. A system stem, you may want to contact them to discuss. But, overall, Norwoods pricing, service, and workmanship is thought of very highly in pipe circles. FWIW, Norwoods is who many shops turn to when pipe repair/refurbishment beyond their own skill is needed. Good luck. Sorry. Edit to add the link I forgot to add earlier... norwoodspiperepair.com/index.html

Id love to know where Laudisi gets their replacement stems. Id imagine they come strait from whoever makes "Dunhill" thesedays (who exactly is it?), Sav, and Peterson themselves.

Left him a message, thanks It looks like SP used to sell replacement stems but not anymore. You'd think this would be a pretty easy thing to find. I'd prefer an original Pete stem, but if I can't find one I'll try a domestic repair guy.

Not that there was anything wrong with the stems. But briar is a natural product. There are bound to be even tiny variances in some of the pipes straight out of the factory. How the pipe is smoked and how it's cared for could result in even more variance from pipe to pipe. Those variances could cause a seller problems when trying to sell a one-size-fits-all stem...even on a system pipe.

It's strange that SP WOULDN'T sell replacements, seeing that they OWN Peterson pipes. That's dumb. I know they USED TO sell them.

I have yet to purchase a Peterson System, or Army mount pipe. But they are on my "wish lists". I don't know from nothing, but I thought the whole idea to the "pressure fit" stems that they use on these type of pipes, were developed during the war so that when stems broke, they could be easily replaced? I've very curious as to how this works out; because I very much want 2 or 3 of these pipes. Also thought it would be fairly easy to swap out PLIPs and Fishtails.

Replacing stems seems easy 'til you try it. Chico: If you went to a machinist with a set of technical drawings and asked him to make what they showed --- the brake master cylinder for an old car --- he wouldn't care if the old car was a $200 rust bucker junker or a two million dollar classic Ferrari. Hours are hours to him. In other words, replacement stem price CAN'T be calculated as some fraction of the present worth of an old pipe... to anyone except the owner of the old pipe.

Being a somewhat novice pipe maker, I can attest that making a replica stem to fit a specific pipe is almost harder than making a stem for an original. In fact, it isn't almost harder, it is harder. George, I watched your videos where you replaced the stem on the Dunhill poker, and as I've said to a couple other resto guys, "restoration is an entire art unto itself." I don't think I'd have the patience for it. @chico, you should watch georged's video series on that, if for no other reason than its utter precision.

Good points.... but this isn't a high end pipe, but a factory that has been made basically the same for what, 100 years? So I'm thinking these stems must be mass-produced and it's not a case of having one custom cut. Peterson used to sell replacements through SP. Then again, it may be that there are minor differences between a current production pipe, and the one I have which I believe is from the 80s. So it probably is better to have one fit. The guy trailboss suggested might be the way to go. Just talked to him and he says he's the only Peterson-authorized guy in the U.S. Odd that Peterson didn't mention him! He'll charge $25-30, which is not much more than buying one from @legend Lover 's UK link. Might also be a good time to get my broken Savinelli Milano spliced, too.... But I was also just told by Adam O'Neill at smokingpipes Europe that Laudisi U.S. is starting to do Peterson repairs, and that they were recently sent a bunch of stems and other supplies. So I have an email in to them, and will report back.

I swear by Mike Myer at Walker. He has two of my pipes right now for stem replacement.

Keep in mind with Norwoods that you will get it back fast and it will be one of the lowest $$ amounts but it will not be "quality" work. And yes I have experience.
I am also in the camp that Peterson stopped selling stem blanks for some reason. $$ would be my guess. Sounds like you are on the right track with the FL guy.

I tried to get a fishtail to replace a P-lip on my SS 307, twice. Neither one came close to fitting. I plan to get one made for it at some point.

Fit is the issue. Always has been, and always will be.
It's why stand-alone replacements are no longer sold. People got angry when they didn't fit well enough to go in and/or stay put. Two thousandths of an inch too much or not enough and she no work.
How long a shape has been in production has nothing to do with it. The fabrication and storage of organic materials does not allow for interchangeability except through endless (economically unfeasible) trial & error, or fitting by hand.
The end.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought pipe repair shops and people like yourself were buying them and fitting them. Just a tweak here or there and you have a new stem. I went into the local B&M here a few years ago and that is what they did. When I took the latest one there they said they cannot get the stems anymore. Sooooo, I tried my hand a Peterson stem a few weeks ago. Damn that was a lot of work and it still turned out a notch below acceptable. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/6039/peterson-before-after-first-replacement

At least, I assumed he gets his stems from Peterson, being the only authorized repairer in the U.S. He did stress that it needs to be fit by someone who knows what they're doing, for just the reasons georged said. He mentioned that depending on how much the pipe had been smoked, how it had stored, etc. could make the difference of the pipe being smokeable or not. That stem you did looks pretty damn fine to me, peteguy!

And by the way, this turned into a great thread! Thanks for all the input. It's good to have info based on smoker as well as pipemaker experience, because I was really doubtful about the need to have one fit and probably would have just bought one from the UK link.

Not really odd when you factor in that ownership recently changed...any agreement with the former owner is probably null and void...I don't know if SP does stem replacements, if they do I imagine it will be done "In house' from here on out....In your situation, I would opt for Howard. I only say that because I have seen his name mentioned positively on old PM threads, but more recently, the proprietor of our local watering/smoke hole sang praises on a Stem repair he had done...I saw it and it was very well done on a rare Pete.....over 30 years as a tobacconist, and a collection of 500 pipes...
Regardless, if you pull the trigger, it would be good to hear your opinion.

I'm pretty sure I'll go with him - just waiting to talk to him again about my other pipe. Would like to hear what Laudisi says just to have the info, but Howard seems like the way to go. I'll report back for sure.

This thread has me ponderin..... Don't mean to offend anyone here, but I'm not really a fan of the P-Lip stems on several of my Petersons. I know, I know, sacrilege right? :-( I would actually like to replace them with standard stems. So, if anyone out there knows where I could do this, I'd be very interested in doing so. And would be much more inclined to smoke these beauties much more frequently than I currently do. Dino

Chico -- I just checked some dusty drawers, and think I have several of the stem model that the 305 uses. (unused and original, not aftermarket) Shoot me your pipe and I'll fit one to it as a freebie. George
