After a great weekend of visiting my father and stepmother, my father was hospitalized on Monday. Complications of his Spinal Stenosis and CIDP both of which contribute muscle weakness, muscle paralysis in some cases and decreased neurologic response.
Tuesday, they installed a port so that he could get plasmapheresis, which essentially is cleaned plasma, this is done via the Red Cross. Tuesday evening, he got the first round and has already perked up a bit.
Yesterday he was feeling a bit more himself but still not anywhere near out of the woods this time. He’ll be in the hospital for at least 7 to 10 days then into rehab. It is unclear if he will be returning home after that.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled reading of happiness.

Praying for your dad.
I would encourage you all to donate blood if you are able. I'm nearing my 3 gallon mark.

We will pray for your dad to recover. Make sure someone is proactively listening in, and paying close attention to what is going on...almost lost my wife twice due to people in the hospitals making bad decisions.

Thank you one and all.
The plasmapheresis seems to be helping, his cognitive function is improving a little more each day. It’s hard to see him this way knowing that less than 10 years ago he was playing tennis 3x a week and now he’s wheel chair dependent.
His health is the main reason I head to NJ every other month, spend a weekend with him and my stepmother do some of the things they are unable to do for themselves, cook a few good meals for them and just spend time. My sister does the same, except the cooking part. She’s not good at it.
Anyway, so long as he does not backslide, this too shall pass.

Semi-brief update on my father.
After being in the hospital for about 10 days and 5 rounds of plasmapheresis, he was transferred to the rehab yesterday.
He is still very weak but improved over where he was when they brought him into the hospital. The CIDP has a very real neurological effect in so far as he was disoriented and cognizantly unaware at times. The transfer took a lot out of him so there was a great sense of overall fatigue yesterday but by evening time he was somewhat recovered.
When we left, he was resting comfortably in the recliner but sometime during the rest of the evening, apparently the seat cushion he uses, which overhung the front of the seat pan, slipped from the seat which he was shifting around causing him to fall. Not far, has a small skin tear on his arm but no other injury. Could have been much worse, as he is a fall risk they have “canary” monitors on him which essentially start singing out if he tries to get up on his own and stuff like that.
While he may be out of the “jungle” he’s still not out of the “woods” by any stretch, will likely be in rehab for the next month.
So, thank you all for your well wishes and prayers, they are greatly appreciated and value.

4/25 dad update. He has had a pretty good week, been having PT/OT every day and while still in a weakened state is improving. They met with the medical team on Tuesday and determined that he is not close to a position where they can even discuss an exit strategy.
Because of medical as dictated by bean counters, he is not allowed to have his IVIG treatment in the rehab facility, so this morning they are transporting him to his Neurologist’s office where he will get his treatment and then returned to the rehab. Makes sense, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought too.
Anyway, that’s about the extent of the report for this week, slow but steady improvement.
Thank you for taking the time to read this if you did.
