I was going some old books and stuff trying to keep myself busy so I don't go stir crazy with this back and leg issue I have been going through and boy did I find a real treasure!!! You may ask what could be so exciting in some old boxes of books, papers, tablets and other debris? Well I found my " Smokey Pleasure Book" I started in 1985 when I was 16 and just started pipe smoking! All I can say is my taste has changed in many ways since then and I have to laugh at how I described some tobacco back then! I am going to post the "reviews" as they are written in my tablet on "Tobacco Reviews" along with a current review of the same tobacco. I see this being some good fun and also a way to view how my taste in tobacco is maturing. So look for some of the silly remarks that came from a 16 year old kid after his first time smoking "Five Brothers" when the Boy scout Leader said to me "here try some Grown-up tobacco kid ,not that candy flavored kid stuff."

I suspect that nearly all of us have changed our choices since we started pipe smoking. I know I have and I'm still learning about blends and pipes. That is the fun part of doing this.

I hope you got a merit badge for handling Five Brothers at age 16. Your Scout leader gave you some good practical advice.

G'Eve, happy days ! I missed out on tobacco in my youth & did not start until my twenties, I do not think I was ever young in a way, as an only son & elder brother to one sister, I always sided with my elders & authority figures, that's life , such is life as they say down south. But I remember well the adventures of Tom Sawyer & fun Huck' Finn, from my night time youthful reading. Bye.

G'day, thinking how I came to smoke a pipe, none of my local or Grammar school pals smoked at all & it was in my late teens & at University some friends of friends would smoke pot but it never caught on with my pals. Then away at college one of my Uni student pals smoked a pipe regularly which I thought was a solid and reliable as he was ,as a metallurgy student, but a lone pipe smoker. After college I came across my favourite Uncles ( from my early years who emigrated to Canada with his wife), his old pipe & empty tins of Balkan Sobranie, he was a soldier in the War, (but my Dad was a sailor in the war but never smoked), & I tried some OTC Troost tobacco in my Uncle's old pipe, & smoked regularly but lightly for years in my local pub & club, the only pipe smoker in my circle of friends, it had died out in those years, the mid 70's onwards locally, & I do not recall even seeing another pipe smoker for many years. A dying habit amongs the cigarette smokers generally. Most young people are horrified by my pipe smoking & think it most eccentric & strange & wicked even. But happy smoking guys & gals,

When I was 10 years old I would smoke dried out tree stems. When I turned 13 I smoked filterless Lucky Stikes, Chesterfields, and Camels. Always loved the taste and odors of tobacco... quit cigs 30+ years ago, but cigars and pipes NOT. I don't inhale but I snorke and retro hale like a fiend.

I find this extremely interesting, as I have wanted to start a pipe smoking journal. I haven't taken the plunge yet, because I am mildly OCD and need to find the "perfect" journal book, then I'm not sure exactly how to lay it out. Would you mind sharing a couple photos of the book? I am looking forward to some of the entries you share with us.

I will post some of my notes from my "Smokey Pleasure Book" and compare how I feel about the blends now.. Here is one of them!
Just a look in to my "SPB" from 1987.. "I just bought a tin of squadron leader because the can looks really cool and I can't wait to try it! YUCK!!!!!!! WHAT IS THIS CRAP? This tastes like old rotten tree bark and gonesh incense mixed together!!!! " Just a note...I still cant stand this tobacco..I tried it again in early 2001 and it was worse than I remember!

Interesting... I wonder how many others keep a pipe journal or remember how much their habits have changed? When I first started I began with aromatics, especially enjoying cherry blends. The tongue bite was horrid until I changed my pipe smoking rhythm. Today non-aromatics dominate, though recently I have been enjoying a few automatics (Mostly lightly topped blends that allow the natural flavors to come through.) from time to time.
Generally I am not sure my 16 year old self would recognize me today. Even so a number of traits still remain the same or similar as one's personality is only so fluid.

16 year old me observing me now: "who's that fat weirdo making pipes in his garage? He's eating all this nasty weird food. And, he works on computer stuff for a living? Gawsh, I hope I don't turn out like that guy..."
Yeah, this wasn't about my tobacco tastes changing, which they have, but I thought it was apropos.
Aros, to crossovers, to everything else.

I have changed a little. I am 100 lbs heavier, I no longer have thick black hair, and I am not as nice to idiots. And at 16 I would have taken a blood oath that I would never use any kind of tobacco.

I picked up my first pipe (Dr. Grabow Omega) and a pouch of Carter Hall at a Rite Aid in '91 to impress a clerk there named Amy. Good Lord I still remember those blue eyes.....π Anyway, still love and smoke Carter Hall.
