Was watching the livestream from Classical Pipes last night and he brought to my attention house bill HR 2339. Now this bill has only been introduced and not heard or voted on yet.
The two primary takeaways that I am seeing from this bill are 1) raising the age of purchase to 21 across the US and the one that concerns me the most is 2) only face to face, direct to sales from a retailer to a consumer.
This cabashes the online tobacco sellers and also where most, myself included, purchase our blends. The shop that carries premium pipe tobaccos is 75 miles away and the closest actual pipe shop is a four hour jaunt, one way.
Now this bill isn't close to being enacted at the moment, but it as a subtle reminder of the war against smokers. We as pipe smokers are bundled in with vapers and cigarette smokers and will be subject to these draconian laws in the future. I for one spent a few moments in reflection last night of how much tobacco I would need to cellar to last me a good many years. Let's just say that on the low end it was a couple hundred POUNDS and on the high end, well, I would have to add an addition to store it all!
What are your thoughts on this?

If this happens and the only place you can get tobacco is at a B&M the sky's the limit on prices..I smoke about a pound a month. If I'm lucky enough to live another 15 years that's close to 200 pounds. At 2 to 3 dollars an ounce I would have to come up with a good bit of money to cellar that much.

Not saying you are wrong Larry, never to discount the wisdom gained from walking the earth longer than me....but....
With the loss of the internet, large pipe tobacco companies would be wise to have reps in place to strategically target tobacco stores in which to sell their product. If a person was to live in an area that has more than one tobacco shop carrying pipe tobacco, it should cause them to be competitive in pricing...maybe not at current online rates, but maybe not fleecing the buyer either. If it does not pass the current congress, it will eventually happen. Without referring to specifics, when political leaders have the power to hammer through the legislation, they will. I have no doubt that they have dusty binders that get blown off and put into the political mill.....I have seen it with comprehensive legislation that certainly was not written as quickly as introduced.

I agree, plus as I stated prior here on the Patch that the sales of online tobacco will eventually be banned. Your local B&M would definitely be much better stocked, but we would ALL be paying extremely high prices for tobacco. Every pipe smoker still has a minimum of 12 months to build up their cellar before any new “ Bill “ is implemented by Congress.
BUY NOW......SAVE MUCH MONEY LATER!!!

How about selling my "collectable tins"? Here is the language of the bill in regards to sales: (c) Prohibition against remote retail sales.—Paragraph (4) of section 906(d) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21 U.S.C. 387f(d)) is amended to read as follows: “(4) PROHIBITION AGAINST REMOTE RETAIL SALES.—Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2019, the Secretary shall promulgate a final regulation under paragraph (1) prohibiting the retail sale of all tobacco products, including electronic nicotine delivery systems and electronic nicotine delivery system accessories, other than retail sales through a direct, face-to-face exchange between a retailer and a consumer.”. And here is a link to the complete text of the bill: www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/2339/text

How about selling my "collectable tins"? Yeah...that would certainly factor in wouldn't it. Steve Fallon would have to be like an FFL, you an buy online, but only take possession of it at a local B&M...of course the B&M would have to collect a fee. Ridiculous, isn't it?

The Shell answer man showed up!
it looks like they covered all the bases...what a crock!
I this spawn of Satan needs to be strangled in the crib...the problem is getting pipe smokers motivated enough to write letters whenever this beast raises it's head.

I wonder if online live video would constitute face to face?

As long as we have idjits eating tide pods and huffing spray paint, the government will think they have to be our nanny. Unfortunately if this bill doesn't pass, I am sure there are a dozen more waiting in the wings to "protect" us commonfolk!!
