chasingembers .........Now that is interesting. I've known a few pipe smokers that were actually allergic to Red Virginias and Perique, but the medication issue is a new one to me. Do the meds make your stomach more sensitive to acidity too? Most definitely, I’m chewing on simethicone daily every few hours. I have no issues smoking red Virginia’s or Perique to this day if aged 5 plus years. Prior I was able to smoke them fresh if dried properly. That could be an interesting investigation into exactly what effects the medication is having on your digestive system to cause that. Possibly even other effects they have on other bodily system other than the ones intended. Medications can have a big effect on ones stomach. I was first diagnosed with ulcers nearly thirty years ago. After learning several meditation techniques the ulcers healed & I no longer needed Pepcidine meds. Then when I was diagnosed with Buergers disease over 19 years ago, pain meds started to take their toll on my stomach. I've been unable to enjoy my favourite bourbon & coke for a few years now, my guts are that bad. Just one drink & I pay for it for days afterwards. At least I'm able to enjoy a beer or stout with a meal without causing ill effect.

MacBaren Plumcake would be my favourite blend except for one thing, it bites like a bitch. It's ok when smoked in a small/medium meerschaum lined Dublin or a Falcon also with a smallish bowl. One bowl a day is fine. Two & my mouth starts to feel it. I'm saving for a reverse calabash (with medium bowl) & am hoping that this will work even better. I love Plumcake and its sibling The Solent Mixture. Have you tried smoking it in a cob? Just cracked a fresh tin of Plumcake (the tin note is simply superb) half filled an MM Diplomat & yep, it burns. It's not half as bad as when smoked in a briar though. Rather than 'biting' my tongue, it's 'heating' my tongue, if that makes sense. Just noticed that Plumcake also has a really nice room note. Wonder if non-smokers would agree? The meerschaum lined bowl works well at minimising bite, so I'm wondering if a block meerschaum pipe would solve the bite issue? (There's a reverse calabash block meerschaum that might work. I'd love to have it but at over $500usd it's beyond my budget)

Going to have to dig mine out of the closet now. Have some Plumcake from '08 and this thread is making me want it.😁

That and/or the lining is aggravated by the meds. It doesn't help that the meds have robbed me of any appetite. I literally have to force myself to eat. What annoys me the most is that I had finally learnt how to drink in moderation & when to say enough, lol.

Is there anything that can be done to counteract the pH issue prior to smoking? Here are the five tips I use to help control my Ph How do I keep a balanced pH in my mouth? 1...Avoid sugary soft drinks. But if you can't resist, drink them quickly and follow up with a drink of water. 2...Avoid black coffee. Adding dairy, not a sugary flavored creamer, can help counteract the acidity. 3...Don't brush before smoking 4...Chew gum, keeps mouth moist. 5...Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water. You can purchase a kit at your local pharmacy and check you Ph level. You may have a high amount of acids in your mouth. This is a simple fix......bicarbonate of soda and water is an excellent method for neutralising the acids......gargle and rinse your mouth. The baking soda and water gargle did seem to help. Thanks!

I find all this very interesting. When I first started smoking, I'd try a blend and unless it just was horrible ( and there were many) I give a blend 3/4 bowls and if it worked, we'd get some more and smoke it. If it didn't , I'd move on to other blends. My smoking has always been a thing for me as I wasn't trying to be a part of a group so it didn't matter to me if a blend which others of the group were ecstatic about if it didn't work for me oward thru the fog !

Back to the OP, I’ve always had success dumping the tin in a bowl, grinding it up by hand, and leaving it in the bowl (covered with a paper towel) for a day or two, depending on the humidity. Seems like a lot of work, but man, there are flavors in that stuff that you will not find anywhere else. Enjoy.
