Jim Beam was my sipping whisky for years. Two fingers, neat. Haven't had any in a long time. Was sort of hankering for something to sip on the other night, but didn't want to go buy a bottle. The last whisky I bought was a bottle of Jack Daniels to make some cold toddies. I didn't like it very much.

Bourbon; nectar of the Gods. I only really like those with a traditional bourbon taste. In my wild youthful partying days, I mainly drank Jim Beam with lots of ice & a touch of coke. Then one cold Winters night when 23yo, driving through sleet in the middle of nowhere, thinking how a bourbon would warm me up, like an oasis in the desert, an illuminated VB sign answered my call. The country pub had just had a Wild Turkey promotion, so when I ordered a 'Jim Beam & coke, lots of ice' the manager said he had Wild Turkey. Having not heard of it before & being used to falling for cheap budget bourbons in the past, I smiled & repeated my order. The manager said I could have it for the same price, which indicated that it was a premium bourbon. Pushing my luck, I asked "And what if I like it?" The manager laughed & said he'd charge any drinks the same as the Jim Beam. When he came back to refill my drink I said "More ice, less coke thanks." As he was playing cards with his mates in front of a log fire, he sat a pile of VHS tapes, the vid remote, placed the bottle of WT, a bucket of ice & cans of coke behind the bar in front of me, with a pad & pen to tick off my drinks & said "Help yourself". Help myself I did. After the 2nd movie finished it was rather late (The manager had closed the doors hours before. Apart from his card playing mates I was the only customer) When it came to paying the bill, he saw the long list of ticks & said "So I guess this means you like it?" & only charged me for less than half what I drank. Since then (1983) the bourbon market has opened up & there's heaps more choice nowadays here in Oz. There's quite a few brands that I like (Makers Mark for e.g.) but Wild Turkey is my favourite. Jim Beam was for getting a bit rowdy. Wild Turkey was for savouring with a special girl (I learnt to mix Turkey with soda water instead of coke) I'd often drink a Jim Beam & coke with a shot glass of Sambuca or Opal Bianca to sip. The sad thing is ..... no, not sad, the bloody tragedy is, is that when I had finally learnt to drink in moderation, when I had finally recognised the point where I could call it a night without having to pay for it the next day, my stomach can no longer tolerate spirits or liqueurs ... sob. I popped in and out of Oz back in the 80's early 90's,Perth,Adelaide,Sydney,Melbourne and Brisbane. What I remember most was like the rest of the Pacific and IO the two whiskies most common were Jim Beam and Jack Daniels...…..and I hate JD now and I did then. When I did find Wild Turkey, especially 101,it was a rare treat. The only place I remember WT 101 being readily available was in Hong Kong...…..dang good thang too because unlike Oz they have shitty beer.I used to take a lot of heat in Oz because I was the yank that walked in the pub and ask for a Steinlager,if they didn't have it I drank Swans lager on the west coast and Castlemaine on the east. After a night on the town I usually ate a Sheila...…….sometimes 2.Them were the days mate

Bourbon is an acquired taste, same with Scotch, I don’t enjoy either. I’d yak on the first sip...lol
My two favorite hard liquors as you’ve noticed prior is 100 Proof Southern Comfort and Rumple Minze Peppermint Schnapps. Both served chilled/neat👍👍👍👍

If I ever wake up with a hangover like that again... just shoot me where I lie. I haven't been drunk in many, many years. And never intend to again. But any more, if I want a sweet drink, I'll probably grab a glass of iced sweet tea or a cold Dr Pepper.

I’ve only been completely out of my mind “ hammered “ the night my partner at the time, lost his life in the line of duty. To this day I’d NEVER drink both at the same time, let alone the same week!!! Since I’m on many meds now, I limit the amount of alcohol I consume, I don’t even get a slight buzz👍

You'd be shocked if you visited the major cities now. It's like a big game of 'spot the Aussie'. Swan lager was good. I'm fairly sure that it's now out of production in Australia. When big multi-nationals bought out the large brewers, we lost a lot of brands. Can you believe that they no longer have Fosters on tap? One must go to a specialty bottle'o to find Fosters in cans (I'm not even sure if it's even brewed here) It's still popular in the U.K. I think. Carlton Draught & those 'cold filtered' beers are now the top sellers. Naturally brewed Coopers pale ale was my favourite until they put a halal tax on it. (Can you believe that nonsense?) Now I drink Tasmanian or boutique Aussie beer. With no halal extortion. Over the years, I've won so much money, bottles of bourbon & free drinks, betting that JD is NOT a bourbon. It's whiskey. It doesn't even taste like a bourbon. Never liked it either. Many a time I ordered a bourbon & coke to receive a JD instead. (That's why I learnt to order by brand) Many bar managers thought that JD was a classier bourbon. I only bet on a sure thing. I'd tell them if they could find the word bourbon on a JD bottle they win the bet. Up until the early 80's, pubs shut at 10-11pm. If one wanted to 'kick on', Kings Cross was the only place to get a drink. Then licensing laws were relaxed. Yes indeed mate, those were the days.

Both served chilled/neat👍👍👍👍 I've never been able to drink straight spirits like bourbon, rum or whisky after drinking 500ml of tequila straight when 15yo. Lip sip suck & I was sick for days afterwards. It churns in my gut threatening to come back up. The odd thing is though, I could drink sweet liqueurs such as Sambuca, Grand Marnier or Drambuie for e.g., straight without issue. Southern Comfort was good but the hangovers were wicked. Peppermint Schnapps sounds good. Butterscotch schnapps is nice.

Bourbon can be made outside of Kentucky. It does have to be made in the US. The mash bill must contain 51% or more corn. New charred white oak barrels must be used. It has to be aged for at least two years. It must not have additional flavoring added. It also can not be more than 125 proof when it enters the barrels. I used to sample and enjoy a lot of different bourbon. Not so much any more. It all tastes too sweet to me now. I prefer a good single malt Scotch or better Mescal andTequila these days. I always have a bottle of bourbon on hand though. Rye too.

WHAT no more Swans????That sucks...….I drank enough of that stuff in Freemantle to float a battleship or two. I never cared for Fosters......the Aussie or Canadian version. Good on you....most Americans don't know that JD is not bourbon,it's mixer at best and even then I detest it. I shut down many a pub in my day...…..by 2-3 am I left the clubs to the younger fellas
