I received this yesterday in a lot of three I bought from Tim West. It's 7 1/2 inches long and totally hand carved 100% wood and it's cool! It is a grainless white wood and light as a feather!
Including shipping I paid $16 for the three pipes and the other two were a new MM cob which looks unique and a Kiko Block meerschaum 1/2 bent so...... I got nothing invested in this pipe!
1. I could leave it as it is and use it as conversation piece? 2. I could sand it and clean up the lines a little bit, stain it, and then use it as a conversation piece? 3. I could smoke it although it needs about 1/4 inch of mud in the bottom first?

Cool pipe. What's it carved from?

Grainless wood?? You sure it isn't meer? Sounds like it...better check and the tenon looks like it was for a meer...but I could be wrong.

It is definitely wood, and there is no visible grain.
I think Tim said it was from China but I am not 100% certain on that.

You've enough pipes that you could keep this as an ornament... But then again, it's a pipe; it should fulfil its purpose.

There have been several threads in the past on the toxicity levels of non briar woods of Chinese manufacture.

Sit it on a shelf and leave it. I don't trust pipes that I am not sure of the wood.

Crushed and pressed Asbestos?
Really, I have no idea. These days I prefer to know what I'm smoking out of.

There have been several threads in the past on the toxicity levels of non briar woods of Chinese manufacture. This is my thinking too. I wouldn't even think about smoking a pipe of unknown wood species no matter where it was made...having been made in China makes it even scarier.

A good point has been made about the toxicity of unknown wood. Best to leave it as an ornament.

A fiberglass pipe made in China, I wouldn’t smoke it. My friend from Long Island purchased a pressed Meer made in China. He stated the 3 times he used the pipe the aroma was of a burnt resin. Just a warning to the wise!!

I would probably toss it. Too many briar pipes to store already. I wouldn't smoke it, that is for certain.

I have seen material like this recently. A very fine grain white wood. Can you say IKEA, yes, broke down a unit to reuse the material the structure was similar.

China manufactures pipes from wood with fiberglass resin added.......smoke at your own risk. As for me I would not take the chance.

Very true. Dusts and resins from some woods are quite toxic.

I'm curious. You guys mentioned some Chinese pipes that were wood and fiberglass? Are these molded? Cast? Formed? Since Tim West assured me wine was 100% wood and it's pretty easy to tell when you hold it that it is carved wood; I am curious what the wood/fiberglass might be? I don't want to drink any Kool Aide! But I appreciate people looking out for me

No disrespect to any Chinese members at all. Every China-made pipe I've ever gotten in a lot has been poor quality crap. Don't smoke it...just look at it.

The Chinese have no regard for public health, and will sell anything to make a buck.
They even know how to screw up a Czech tool, while stamping “Made in Czechoslovakia” on it.

I once found a pipe tool that didn't slide quite right and it turned out to be stamped "Made in Czeom" instead of "Made in Czech"

Leave that pipe be just as it is. I really feel it's doing just what it's supposed to do

If it were mine I'd throw it away because it has NO esthetic value what so ever nor smoke ability. Just my opinion
