I'm far from stupid and I have no tattoos that I got to "look tough." I also find tattooed woman attractive. Still, I respect EVERYONE'S opinion. Your right, I did come off a bit abrasive and I apologize. Sometimes times subjects that I'm very close to bring out feelings I shouldn't express publicly.
Thanks for stepping up. Good man.

Since we're on the subject of tattoo's I added three more to my collection of bottle caps. A Sprite, Moxie and one for Ted, the Nehi Grape.

Love the ink and the theme. I'm reminded I need to get some Moxie and smoke a pipe. I dont know, I just feel the two would mix well.

It's quite alright. I was not offended at all. These days, it takes a lot to rub me the wrong way. I was just throwing my 2 cents in the pot. I see no problem with what you said, we're all entitled to our opinions. Nice ones Ken.

From what I can sense here, if it's tastefully done by a professional in a clean and sterile environment, and if the tattoo has meaning, then there's less chance of the thing going wrong or the tattoo being regretted.

I look at it this way. At my age if it's something I regret it will be a short lived mistake.

I know a lot of great people who have tattoos. Still, when I first meet someone with a tattoo my inner beast screams "different than me!" It's as foreign an idea to me as getting a transfusion of tiger blood. To each his own.

Life beats me up enough as it is, I just never felt tempted to go let someone perforate me with inky needles. I alway believed when a man has a choice, pain is bad. Too often I don't have a choice, but with tattoos I do. So I dont. In my youth I was an angry young man as a result of years of abuse. It didn't take much to trigger me, especially when drinking. This led to many regrets (usually the day after) By the time I was around 32yo when I was going through an ugly separation & divorce, subconsciously I needed an expression of pain on the outside that I was feeling on the inside. (Yes, it hurt. Especially on the inside of the arm & on the shoulder bone) As I'd grown past getting drunk & brawling, I got inked. I've got short sleeves to just above my elbows. No regrets. My ink was for me, not for others, which is why I got them where they are easily hidden. I can't understand the way young people get face, neck & hand tattoos today. Back in the day, most tattoo shops had a sign 'NO FACE NECK HAND OR FEET. Don't even ask.' Also, I don't understand why girls today are getting ink. Back in the day it was extremely rare to see ink on a girl. The best thing about females is their skin & their shape. Tattoos detract from females. Like graffiti on a Bentley. In years to come, tattoo removal will be BIG business. Mark my words.

I can’t imagine any ink a twenty year old would get would be a good idea. I work with inked up kids. It seems like something they do to fit in. Many noticed a pipe dealer last weekend who seems to be going through a midlife thing in what will end up as unfortunate ink.

Evening all was hoping to see if anyone here can share some info on getting a tattoo. My son who is 20 and a sophomore in collage has decided he wants to get a tattoo. He's a good student and very responsible, so I support him in his decision. He is doing research into reviews and feed back regarding the different tattoo places in Albuquerque. He has asked me to go with him him to check out the 2-3 he has narrowed it down too. Unfortunately I know nothing about tattoos or tattoo shops. So I have no idea what to look for or what questions to ask. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. There's some good advice in this thread, especially what McWiggins posted. The only thing I can pass along is opinion. If he's narrowed it down to 2 or 3 he needs to wait. He's needs to know what he wants. Shouldn't be any uncertainty about what he's getting. Once he settles in on an artist whose work he likes, the artist can and should give suggestions to the design and placement that he has in mind, but he really needs to know what he wants. The other thing is just from my own personal situation. I wanted ink in my teens and 20's. I'm glad that I didn't get them. It would have been stupid shite that I would have had to get removed and covered up. What I thought was important was really short term interest. The tattoos I've gotten in my 30's and 40's I love and make me smile every day. I'll be that old guy (hopefully) all winkled up and covered in ink....and I'm good with that.

The advice offered above is good. I have about 10% of my body tattooed. Most people do not know that. Why? If it may not be "covered" in a business setting, it's not an area you want to get inked. Yes, yes, yes, we should not judge anyone that might have a tattoo showing, but trust me, people do in the very first few seconds of meeting you. So not above the collar, not below half way down your forearm. Tattoos are personal and for your own pleasure, not to show off to all.

Here are some thoughts: 1) As mentioned before, good work is not cheap. If you're son wants to go in for a $50 tattoo, its likely something that he won't have put much thought in, won't have any meaning, and he'll likely regret it. I'd avoid any flash -- stock tattoo designs that are pulled from a book. 2) I see a lot of guys walking around with random tattoos that just look terrible. No thought put into content or placement. Just look at the Adam Levine, singer from Maroon 5. He's got lots of tattoos, and individually they are very high quality. Put when he went shirtless for his Super Bowl performance it was just a mishmash of nonsense on his chest. Terrible. 3) I decided for myself to go big or go home. I feel like if you get a small tattoo that is a "test" tattoo to see if you like it, you likely won't be happy with the design over the long term. The general advise is to come up with a design idea and then let it cook for 6 months. If you still like the idea after a waiting period, go for it. After your first tattoo this process can be accelerated. I have two tattoos. The first one I opted for a half sleeve and mulled the design over for several months. This one cost around $1000 after tips. My second tattoo I got to commemorate the time I spent in Tucson, AZ before moving to Knoxville, TN. This design took me about a week to come up with.

I don’t care to ever have any tattoo’s myself, not really a fan of them. Those that do however, I do not think negatively of. I know that attitudes are changing about tattoo’s but I would think that in some professions that a person my choose to pursue, they can be a hindrance if they are visible.
Gang tattoo’s, and prison tat’s perform a public service though... it definitely raises my alert level.

I could never find anything to permanently tattoo on my body.
What do you do when you put some womans name on you, then you split apart? Putting a religious cross on you, then you discover logical rational thinking, and become an atheist? Putting a sports hero logo on, then have them become a public disgrace?
Then there is the section of society which will brand you as a person with a very small ego by wanting to draw others attention to yourself (otherwise known as S.P.S.....small penis syndrome)
