SP has recently added Morta pipe kits @ $35.00 & $40.00. - Ebonite or Acrylic stems - Their listed under Smoking Pipes Gear (where I feel they are easily overlooked).
Definitely a modest way to acquire a Morta pipe and do some carving to suit.

These kits are cool, I recommend taking a look if one wants to try their hand at morta pipe creation. And they are priced reasonably too.

That's a great price to make your own morta...although, for me it would turn into firewood very quickly.

I'd like to hear from someone who actually got this kit. I understand that morta is very difficult to work with.

I was actually considering picking a couple up. I'm kind of scared at what I'll end up with though. haha

I'm thinking of getting one and smoke it as it is.

I bought one about 6 months ago from another vendor (not mentioning here but you can pm if you want). I will take a picture this week and show you the results. This stuff is like a rock. I used a jig saw, a belt sander, some files and then hand sanded. I would not do it again but that is just me.
I ended up making the shank too thin and it cracked during the first smoke so I came up with a solution. I bet you are all excited to see "The Red Pig".

I suck at carving. Which means I would double suck at carving Morta.

I raised this topic last night at our pipe club meeting because we had 2 pipe makers there who have worked with morta. I have one morta from each of them. They were very leery if these kits because if you don't have the right tools and temperament you'll have a real mess on your hands. I'm including pictures of my 2 pipes just to illustrate what real artists can do with this material. By Juan Urquiza By Jason Zeiner

hey, man! That bowl is done right. Ain't a thing wrong with that. If you can one-off a bowl like that, and a replacement stem like you did for the Peterson, I'd say you've got a leg up. Grab you an ebauchon and get to work!

Thanks for all the kind words. The Red Pig smokes just fine. I have no regrets but I wouldn't do it again. A shitton of work.

Peteguy...you did just fine!..I know the feeling that you were mentioning...if I tried it would be just a ugly mess...Hey! maybe that is the answer...it could be just as ugly as me...we'd be twins...both grey...both a mess.
