That horse actually carries the color gene gray, she's not a true roan. She will continue to lighten in color until she is almost white, except her mane and tail. They'll stay black. That boy is the dream of just about every girl in this town, and some girls in the surrounding towns. 😁 It's great to be young.

Dewayne, I love the pictures and a glimpse into your world, if more of society operated as your family does, the world would be in a better place.

Dewayne, I love the pictures and a glimpse into your world, if more of society operated as your family does, the world would be in a better place. Thank you. That is a very, very nice compliment. We do try to maintain our own little island of peace, sanity, joy, family and common sense in this crazy world that surrounds us. It's worth it.

You know things are right when you do for fun, on your day off, what you do during the week for pay. In these parts, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, all the towns and villages are set 20 miles apart. Why dat, you ask? 'cause that is how far a man can ride in a day here.

Didnt make 20 miles, only got 11 and 1/2 miles in. But Boone was as fresh and full of himself coming in as he was going out. That big hoss dont get ridden enough. Here he just came in from a hard 3 hours, he's dripping wet with sweat, and I gotta hold him in, he wants to go.

By the way, just did a little bit of research - 3 hours of hard riding AT A WALK for a 190lb man burns 1500 calories.
For those of you looking for a workout alternative... 😁

My last name is Atkins, if I ever start playing the Lotto and win big, my ranch will be “The lazy A” 😝 Seriously though, I work hard and busted 70 drums the other day and the processing required handling them 3 times apiece. Some were at 900 pounds, and doing the work has allowed me to be more physically fit than people half my age that are all balled up. I transported 49,000 pounds this week though and glad to be done with it. I have an easy week next week working in the yard and office for the most part. On Wednesday I will meet with our Amargosa driver in Kingman, then 4 days off with the wife. I hope to go to New Mexico for the next week on a retail run, which isn’t so taxing... don’t want to go to California. Sorry for the thread drift.

After a lot of time and work, we've entered into the fighting mare's 2nd month of training. She's doing really good now. We took her out for her first ride outside of a fence yesterday, and did 7 miles across open country. She did great.

Went and gave horsemanship lessons to a young couple today who had bought their first horse. They are the type of people that make my profession a pleasure to be in. Nice couple with a really nice horse.
Got some hay hauled back here to the ranch, then had a training session with one of our own young horses that had developed an issue. We successfully helped her work her way through that.
We have a 12 mile ride scheduled for tomorrow on big Boone and Pepper, the client's little fightin' mare.

Always good to see your pictures, Dewayne...last of the true cowboys, with honor and integrity as your guiding light. Makes us older guys truly glad to know about your life and to share the pictures that give us a boost in this life that lacks so much in integrity and honor.

I had Will take the little fightin' mare out today, as I'm still recovering from last week's horse wreck. He made it less than a mile, turned around and came back. She was on the fight again, not bucking but not listening, rebelling against everything, fighting everything. He said " I've not felt that clueless on a horse in a long time. I didnt know what to do to get her to calm down, she was just getting worse". I got on her, did the old man thing that old men do, and this was her in about 7 minutes. He said "I guess I need to stick to riding broncs. Cuz' that kind of horsemanship, I just dont have". We sat on the front porch after everything was done, and talked. I reminded him again that any skill in life worth learning takes a lifetime to achieve, and if he doesnt TRY to be a horseman just because he isnt yet a horseman at a certain level, he'll never become that horseman. A bronc rider aint a horseman. He's just too hard on himself. He's miles ahead of where I was at his age, because I never had a teacher. He's gonna make a great hand. But 18 yo's dont see life in 20 year chunks, and he just has to be patient with himself. And that's a hard thing to learn.

Dewayne read a book I believe you will like it’s called Toas Lightning, it’s about a horse race from Galveston Texas to New England, the winner gets 3000$, in 1888 that was big bucks. Lots of horse info, believe you would like it. Johnny D Boggs author.

Well, I finally finished the little fightin' mare and sent her home. Her owner has ridden her a number of times now, and is ecstatic. I heaved a huge sigh of relief, cuz that filly is a pistol. You cant train away personality, you can only teach the tools to harness it and use it. The rest is up to the owner/rider.
Im gettin' some pretty good advertisement out of it, though. So it's good to win one sometimes.
