The areas in this map are also volcanic as well as one the most active earthquake zones in the world.

Interesting, Sean. Thanks for the link. I find volcanic and geothermal fields fascinating, whether active or not.

It's only a matter of time before that tectonic plate moves dramatically. We joke about having "ocean front property" here in AZ but, the fact is, it could be a real catastrophe.

Very interesting Sean, thanks for posting.
Maybe not in my time, according to geologists and seismologists there is a 100% chance of a severe earthquake that will cause catastrophic results throughout Los Angeles area. This is one time I Pray that scientists are wrong.

The Owens Valley quake of 1872 estimated at 7.7 left fault thrusts of 24 feet in areas the San Franciso quake of 1909 was estimated at 7.9. I believe the Owens quake was much larger based on 3 foot fault line in Landers of 1992 est 7.2.

Not to many folks live on the eastern Sierra from Mammoth to Barstow maybe 150 thousand and that would be in the cooler months when mining goes all out and the skiers hit the slopes. The desert is very unforgiving on that stretch in the summer months.

Mammoth Long Valley Caldera in 2012 takes a puff. Trees started dying to increased Co2 levels being released around 1990.

I lived through Loma Prieta, drove on the lower deck of the cypress structure 45 minutes before it pancaked. When I was back at the warehouse, the 60 ft racks of pallets started swaying and I jumped out an open dock door just in time to see a transformer explode about 100 feet in front of me as the power lines hit the deck.
Still minor stuff compared to others...so many fault lines, if they go in a big way, California will be a very bad place to be.....

I had cousins visiting from Illinois at the time of Loma Prieta. You've never seen a couple more eager to find a plane to get home. The apartment building felt like it had been lifted a foot in the air and dropped. (Russian Hill in SF)
I am now on flat ground in a nice valley, but only God knows what will be destroyed and what will remain untouched, and all shades in between.

Losing CA would be catastrophic for the entire country. Also, imagine the resulting tidal waves wreaking havoc in the pacific.

2500 quakes since the 4th and still rocking 3.0/4.0 every hour. Funny thing is the San Andreus has not made a peep. The Navy said to heck with it and evacuated the base at China Lake as the base is non operational. Only essential staff on duty. China Lake is one of those places where eggheads develop things that go KaBoom it also has a large aircraft graveyard with lots of WWII era stuff.

California pretty much has already entered the catastrophic phase, but doubly catastrophic would be pretty bad.

Earlier today the swarm was less than 2800 it is up to 3300 now. The bigger circles are the bigger magnitudes. Heck you boys are smart you can figure it out. I have been watching this map for a couple of days. Normally I check out the Mammoth area and the Long Valley Caldera on a regular basis since it has become more active starting in the mid 90s.

Your welcome Ted I have been staring at it for days. It is cool to check it every couple of hours and watch the numbers rack up. I hope the seismologists are learning a lot from this.

Wow, this is really interesting stuff. Esp when earthquakes and volcanoes are essentially science fiction in Ireland. We see no movement whatsoever.

Good morning Ted. It get additive watching it change and checking the red dots. Over three thousand after shocks. I wish the news would show Trona a little north of Ridgecrest as there are three big borax refineries in the Searles lake bed. Also Inyokern has about a 1000 people. As a side note Mt Saint Helens had earthquakes for two months before it erupted. The Coso range is very old with lots of Granite and some amazing petroglyphs.

It's a common fallacy that people think California is going to fall into the ocean. In reality the Pacific plate goes under the continental plate and continues to. While that is a accompanied by earthquakes, if there is a big continental shift, California will actually gain coastal property that was once submerged. We'll become a much larger state than we are today. Perhaps one day we can claim to be bigger than Texas.

Could happen, whether or not there are living inhabitants of planet earth, some several millions of years from now! When I was at college, tectonic plate movement was just a theory, though the best one at the time. In addition to California's land mass being pushed up, and gaining, the East Coast is subsiding. The Rockies are way younger than the Appalachians and other Eastern ranges.
