My first eBay Meer lesson cost $100.00 for 4 Figurals with shank extensions and custom cased. To a Meer neophyte they seemed a bargain. Unfortunately they were Tourist grade Pressed Meerschaum and cracked within 6 months. I have subsequently wised up, albeit, paying for the knowledge.
Incidentally, you can verify Block Meerschaum (when new) by sticking your tongue or damp finger on it. If it sticks, it is Block.

Yeah, when I learned about that I tested all my meers and they passed. Funny enough, I have Peterson and Manx African meers and they don't stick or anything. More like rock compared to Turkish meer. They smoke between a meer and a briar.

I’m a briar guy. Meer doesn’t grab me. I really don’t like morta. Cobs don’t really grab me either, but I do smoke a Legend in the morning lately while out in the horse corral waiting for one of the horses to eat his senior feed. I have to wait to make sure the other two don’t get into his feed pan.
My favorite non-briar material is olive wood.

Briar is da'bomb! Especially when it's Mimmo's briar like a Radice. Pear is fine, as well as maple, but nothing touches briar for a rich, satisfying smoke.

This is a myth. I've (gently) run a pipe knife around my Altinok meer immediately after smoking. Been doing it for years with no ill effects. I'm no expert on meerschaum, so just thinking out loud here; being a natural material, would it not be the case where there's varying quality of the material used, where there's varying degrees of hardness? Sure. Just as there are different densities and hardness of briar. I wash my meers in hot water, to no ill effect. And once I soaked a meer overnight to see how much water it'd absorb. Answer: Fifty percent of its weight and a touch more!

I often put a really low bid on ebay pipes just to keep an eye on the auctions. So I put a $3.25 bid on a pear wood Poker with camo design and won it [Postage was $15, lol] Just realised that it's been over 3 weeks and it hasn't arrived. Polish mail service must suck.

Both briar and meer (block) offer a great smoke...but I find myself reaching more for the cobs than the other two...particularly after staining the cobs..my favorite is still the one that Ken did with green stain and brass on the end of the shank and black stem.

I prefer briar over everything. Meerschaum is tough enough to take drops and bangs but they do scratch easily or lose their shiny glossy finish if care isn’t taking. I must admit I like the smooth glossy finish of a high grade meerschaum and it’s the coloring effect I am drawn too. I smoked some SPC Potlatch through my meerschaum and it did bring out flavor I wasn’t getting with my briars but even my briars smoke blends different. I have to be careful looking at all pipes because I end up buying another and I really need to thin out my herd. 60 pipes is a bit too many, lol? I must admit some blends smoke sweeter through a cob and I don’t know why. I got two new cobs and they don’t smoke as sweet as the cob I bought from B & M shop.I do know the shop sold very few cobs and it was 20 years old so maybe cobs age like briar??

Keep an eye out on when the window closes for filing a claim, I do know that when you do file a claim for non delivery is made the clock is ticking, and it is up to the buyer to make a determination on whether they want a refund. Implementing that action usually gets the seller off their butt and they get things moving.... but in your case, since you snagged it at such a low price, that might be what he wants so that he can put it back up?

Yeah I just realised that last night. Just fired off an email to the seller. I've often seen pipes get pulled by the seller 24 hours before it's ended when the bids were really low, only to see them put back up for sale. At $3.15, sellers remorse could be on the cards.

Im looking on ebay and there are some cheap meers made in china and are unbranded. Any advice? Welcome to the Briar Patch. What Mike said; run. The Chinese 'meers' are made from plastic or some sort of composite. Normally I avoid any pipe Made In China, but there are some Chinese briars - Road Town - that are going real cheap. Apart from the fact that the 'carbon' lining has a strange taste [so I sandpaper it off] the three that I've fired up are all good smokers.

After smoking my three for the last 40 years, only block meers from Turkey are worth smoking. I have one Altenook and two Becklers and though they are pricey , over $150.00 now, They are well worth it. Better to have one good looking good smoking meer than several pieces of s*** !

My B&B Pear Wood Poker finally arrived this morning. It looks better IRL than the pics. Nice weight and feels good in hand. Let us know how it smokes. I've now had several bowls in my Pear Wood Poker. Smoking some PS Bullseye Flake in it as we speak. This is a very good smoker. I'm impressed. It's got a 'waist' where it narrows some in the middle of the bowl [On the outside off course] which makes it easy and comfortable to hold. What a score!
