Hey BP,
I just got another big shipment of tobacco in and I have a mental dilemma I need assistance on. I love to collect tobacco and display the sealed tins knowing the tobacco is getting a fine age. However, sometimes I just want to open a tin and smoke it even though I have a dozen other open tins I need to go through before I should open another.
How do you guys decide on when to open a new tin? Do you just want it and smoke it or do you at-least try to go through your open tins first?

I am constantly adding jars to my cellar as I open a new tin. If I really want to try something I buy at least two tins. One to open and jar up and the other to age. If it is a blend that gets great reviews from guys I generally have found to like what I enjoy and it is in my wheelhouse, I will buy at least five tins.

Your profile picture is classically smokey, by the way.

I have definitely done that with tins I have multiples of. I have a couple dozen mason jars full of those tinned tobaccos.

If its a "new to me" tin, I open it to try. I want to know if its something I like and should stock up on when a sale hits.
Once open it can last years put in a canning jar.

That's a good strategy I hadn't considered. I've only been smoking a pipe for about 3 years so if I followed this strategy I wouldn't have any sealed tins. haha.
Most of my tinned tobacco I have never tried. I guess I should try it in case a good sale does happen.

Buy a vacuum sealer on Amazon. When curiosity gets the better of me and I have many tins open, I just bag a tin up and seal it again til I have some room in my rotation. It's good to know what you like so you aren't needlessly cellaring tins.
Also, I have found that tins can keep a blend for months if you aren't opening the tin daily to load a pipe from it.
Another good point is that some blends (I always use Black House as an example) are really great after drying considerably. I once lost an open tin and found it six months or so later only to find it perfectly transformed.

This where the 4 ounce jelly jar becomes useful. Pop a tin, satisfy your curiosity with 3 or 4 bowls and the remainder neatly fills the jelly jar.

I have several jar sizes I use for cellaring 4oz to 16oz. And one huge flip top jar full of SG St. James Flake.

All of the above works well for me...I have about 80 jars that are opened that I smoke out of for my rotation...then I have large jars for bulk tobacco that is aging nicely in the cellar along with tins also aging nicely in the cellar. In other words I have too damn much tobacco out...but what-a-ya gonna do..it is already out....I live with the dilemma.

Even tho I have said in other places here on the Patch, that I’m trying to smoke down the open tins I have. I have started to open some new to me tins that I know I can still get. I try to smoke the entire tin in a few weeks in different pipes and if like it, I then order more for the cellar. Worried I may open one in the future and love it and it’s no longer available. My learning experience for this was McClelland.

...if I want to open a tin, I do so. If I choose to interrupt aging by opening a jar, I do it... I've decided not to worry... YMMV...

I order one tin to try, unless it's something highly rated, and then I will buy more. If I like the test tin, I will buy more. If I am not a fan, I will jar the test tin and revisit to see if it changes, or if my tastes have changed. For example, I ordered a tin of Edward G. Robinson. My first and second smoke did not wow me. So, I jarred it, figuring I could strike it off my future buy list. Then, I pulled the jar out of storage to try while enjoying an Edward G. Robinson movie marathon. Now, I love it, and it is in my regular rotation with a few tins stored in the cellar. Never judge a tin by your first two or three smokes. If you don't like it right away, jar it and revisit later. And hell, if you still don't like it, I am sure someone here will take it off your hands. I have a deep cellar (paranoid by nature), and there are things in there that I've never even tried. If, when I try it, I figure I am not a fan, it will work out to the Patch's benefit.

I put together a 300+ pound cellar to have tobacco around for a time that it was too expensive or when I could no longer justify the expense. Any aging that happens is due to not having gotten around to it yet, and all tobacco in my collection is fair game at any given time.

I use half pint jars for everything except Luxury Navy Flake - I have two flip top jars (presumably like yours) of LNF. I use half pint jars for insurance. If you fill a quart jar and it gets moldy, you're out a lot of tobacco. And a half pint jar is the perfect size for a 50g tin.

I do the same for the same reason. I also enjoy that its like opening a tin as well. I go so far as to vacuum the jars. I figure, the tins come vacuumed, why not do the same when packing bulk for long term storage?

I smoke what I want when I want aging be damned. If I'm jarring up a pound I always keep some in a smaller jar to put in the rotation and I have quite a few small jars and opened tins I smoke from. I also have many tins that I haven't even tried yet but will at some point.

There are a number of tins that have yet to appear in the smoking rotation.

I smoke a fair amount of bulk, and jarred tobaccos from half pound bags. Opening a new tin usually occurs when I've finished another jar of something. I have way too many single and double tins of stuff that I've not tried. Pretty much a first world problem!

When you reach our age, although you don't have to be as old as we, you realize that each day is precious and you don't want to ..." wait til later" You may not be there for later.Just my take on things and not attributable to Martin, although he may feel the same way.

I smile pipes and cigars for the relaxation of it. I used to be anal about certain things and realized that it adds stress to an otherwise stress less hobby of mine.

In general, I decide to open a new tin when a space on the tobacco shelves opens up. On the odd occasion when I get something that I just have to try, I will pop the tin, smoke a bowl or three, put the rest of the tin in a jar, and put the jar in my cellar. I once found a small curio/knickknack shelf in an antique store that I use to hold my open jars. The three shelves each hold five jars plus two more on top next to a pipe rack. So, I have a good way to keep myself to 17 jars open.

I have been smoking long enough and my cellar is deep enough that I no longer have this decision to make. If I recall correctly I had a bunch of stuff "open" that was then put in the small jars. I eventually smoked thru it all and I am down to 6 jars for the stuff I am currently smoking. The odds and ends go in a ziplock mylar bag that gets transferred to one of the 6 jars when one becomes free.

Although I've been amassing my modest cellar for only a few years now, the majority of it is aged tobacco that I've been fortunate enough to acquire. That being said, I honestly can't say how many open tins/jars I have, but probably somewhere between 25 & 40 ish? As far as trying to decide whether or not to open a tin? Most of my tins are stacked newest in the back of the shelf, oldest on the front. If it's one that I really like or haven't tried, I open the oldest tin and smoke it first. Not very scientific, I know, but it works for me.
