I'm a newbie here and have a few years smoking pipes. But I'm still learning about tobaccos and if they have gone bad or not. I have some whiskey Cavandish that has been in the original plastic bag for about 2 years and now smells like vineger. Does that mean it's gone stale? It is still very moist. I have other tobaccos that have been in their bags for just as long but still smell fresh and good. Thanks guys.

Bag? Do you mean the original sealed pouch or a ziplock (or other) bag?
Also, what is it? Like who is the blender and the name of the blend?

I’ll let other experts chime in, but I think you’re OK. From what I gather, vinegar applied lightly is sometimes used as a preservative in blends. McClelland was known for it.

If I haven't said so already, welcome!.
Tobacco only gets better with age usually. Some blenders use vinegar as a preservative.
How much difference is there in the smell compared to when first opened?

You'll just have to smoke a bowl and see. It won't kill you, possibly even improved.

It's either OK, or has gone the way of the 3.5lbs of J4 Burley I bought that was stored in a humidor for 4-5 years. You'll have to try it. If it's like the J4, I feel for your mouth.

Maybe the whiskey has gone off.
I would advise as others have...try it and see if you like it. I would have a wee look and check for mould though. If you see some fur, I'd stay clear.

Good luck and if you try it...make it a small taste and don't make yourself sick in the process. Probably won't kill you....and welcome to the forum.

as my supply of McCelland Virginias grows smaller and smaller I was thinking how much I'd like my tobaccos to smell like that.

I've only seen it on line and if I buy any more tobacco right now the better half will serve papers on me...I still have some 2010 and an unopened tin of St. James Woods, after that ,it's on to 515 RC1 .

When you do get to 515, grab a press. Its good as it is, great when pressed. Good stoved too! And aged, yep!

(Super Value Whiskey Cavendish) it’s been in the original sealed ziplock bag. Those bags arent the best with their seals so their is a chance something in the environment might have gotten to it as that shouldnt have a vinegar odor. With that said, if nothing appears to be growing on it you should be able to smoke it without issue. For all you know it could be quite good. From a personal note, Cramptholomew picked up a bulk blend that had many more years on it than yours. It had a heavy vinegar smell to it and we smoked it. It was OK but had a bite that could rip a mouth apart.

Lol I stopped drinking wine years ago. My wife said either the wine or the tobacco, but not both. So after I stopped crying lol we agreed on the tobacco.

Lol Before I found pipe forums like The Briar Patch, for 7 years I smoked a pipe without much of a clue. My fellow pipe smokers were so patient and generous sharing their experience and knowledge. Although it was a steep learning curve, now that I've got a much better understanding re; pipes and tobacco, I've gained so much more enjoyment from the hobby. Don't ever be shy to ask. There's no such thing as a dumb question when we don't know. Glad to hear that your bag of tobacco still smells good. I'm thinking that if the tin was exposed to heat then maybe the tobacco sweated and fermented? Not that that's a bad thing necessarily [Some processing techniques fermentation is the goal] A simple way of telling if the tobacco in the tin is ok is to smell it. If it smells off or unpleasant I'd bin it.

Ok I just tried it. I didn’t see any fur nor any green mould stuff, so put a small amount in a bowl and lit it up...............Yuk I didn’t like it 🤮🤢 Lucky that the rest of the bag smells good & I will throw that tin of yuk away. So now I know, smells like vinegar, throw it away! 😩😁
