Weel, I finally did it! I smoked my WGM meerschaum for the first time today. I had decided about a year ago that I would smoke it, rather than making $100 profit off of it. Anyway, here is a picture of it ready to go, with what I chose to break it in. I love Father Dempsey and thought it a good choice to begin coloring the pipe. I will post pictures now and then of the progress as the pipe starts to change tone. I am logging what I smoke and when. I am only handling the pipe by the stem or with a cloth or paper towel. Also, please feel free to add your meerschaum pics to this post. I think it may just become a busy thread.

Good luck with your project, Don. That is a beautiful meer in that the simplicity is perfect. I enjoy my meers on occassion...don't smoke them enough so it seems...don't really know why, they are within reach...just so much easier to grab a cob or a briar.

If you go bowl by bowl, this will be one long thread.

No, just progress with bowl count and a picture on occasion. I am not that much into self flagellation, Mike!

Should be some coloring on the top, then the shank to get the ball rolling. Very nice pipe, btw .

Don...Stalin's ghost? I heard that ghosting a Meer is an exercise in futility, and Stalin = BAD! Nice looking pipe, and quite a chunk of Meersshaum, you need to get with it on the coloring process, to reap the visual rewards that I am sure the olfactory rewards will run far ahead of.

Charlie, it smoked great the first time out. I am not sure I have enjoyed Father Dempsey's more in any other pipe. And that is saying a lot, since it is a favorite of mine. Just started the Martin Cruz Smith book.

Depending on your age, if you want to colour it quickly smoke it weekly at least twice a week so it will colour before you die ! BTW that's a very beautiful pipe so enjoy it !

Yes, it does! Sal...to help those of us who are age/eyesight/mentally impaired...please make your pictures larger...much easier than me using a magnifying glass every time you post a picture...just a simple request which you may or may not agree with. JMHO.

Mike, I will try to fit it in at least once a week. It does smoke nicely. I have two other meerschaums. Both are very plain estates that did not cost me much. They are already toned though. This will be only the second meer pipe I have had when new. My first was a gourd calabash when I was in college. I sold it on eBay many years ago in a moment of stupidity.

Nice looking pipe. I recently picked up a new meerschaum that I have yet to smoke. Picked up some White Knight to try as well, and may give it a go.

Would be fun to see progressive pics as the pipe colors.

A couple of my meers developed grey/silver streaks while coloring. I thought I was stuck with them, but on a whim, scrubbed them lightly with a sponge and liquid hand soap. It worked, the streaks disappeared and it did not disturb the coloring already in progress.

I'm glad you let the pipe fulfil it's purpose.
It's a lovely pipe, Don.

Probably why I rarely smoke one.

Does missouri meerschaum count? I think we could also have a great cob thread, Paddy!

This was my first meer... Ok, ok.... It's not a "true" meer, but hey, it's a meer bowl. ;-) Here's my second and only other meer... This thread has made me aware of the fact that I don't smoke either of these near enough. Thanks for posting. Dino

They are classic in my book. Get some color on that other one! Looks like a generous sized bowl.
