Here's the pics of the new-to-me pipe that was once owned by one of my favorite actors, William Conrad. Ever since I read about his Charatan collection in Richard Carleton Hacker's book back in 1988, I have coveted the idea of owning one of them. This is a Charatan Executive Extra Large Stretch Apple from the Lane era. If anybody is able to help me get an approximate date of the pipe, I sure would appreciate it. Many grateful thanks to Sablebrush for this rare opportunity.

Thanks for the pics, Motto. It was the one of the far left that first got my attention all those years ago, and ever since I've desired to own one of Conrad's pipes. It's a dream come true for me, and it's even more special because my good friend Sablebrush was kind and generous enough to gift it to me. If I had seen it somewhere and bought, it'd still be special, but being a gift from Sable makes it even more special to me.

Congratulations, Jim!
When I lived in Germany as a kid, I got to know William Conrad as matt Dillon on the armed forces radio network...when I first saw James Arness on Gunsmoke!, I though who is this poser? I liked him on Cannon, people would call him a "fat man", and he seemed to enjoy it.

I liked him on Cannon, people would call him a "fat man", and he seemed to enjoy it. I heard he hated Johnny Carson because Carson made so many fat jokes about Conrad on the Tonight Show. Dunno whether he really felt that way, but I do remember the fat jokes from that time period. They do pick about his weight on Cannon, but I suppose that was a different thing. As for Gunsmoke, Conrad was much better than Arness, but he just didn't look the part. Conrad's Dillon often stated he hated his job, quit a couple times, showed some vulnerability, and more humanity than Arness ever did.

Jim, I liked the Gunsmoke TV show for the Doc vs Chester and then Festus interaction. The TV series did carry on the tradition of the stories being somewhat dark at times, often without a happy end to them. The acting holds up well, even today. On the radio version, Conrad was excellent, as he was in most everything he did on radio. Have you ever seen Conrad in a westen called "The Ride Back"? Great movie from '57. He is great in it. i highly recommend it, if you haven't seen that one.

Don, I agree about the TV version, but the half hour episodes that used the earlier radio scripts were often softened around the edges and occasionally weakened the stories, which also includes the original characters. I've watched them all and listened to all that exist. I like the TV version, but the radio series had more punch.
I've always wanted to "The Ride Back", but never have. From what I have heard, it was a kind of pay back to Conrad for missing out on the TV role of Dillon. Notice he plays a sheriff in the movie.

Hi, I am amongst some real fans & enthusiasts, Bill Conrad, reminded me a bit of my Uncle Bill , Big Bill, a pipe smoker who emigrated to Canada with my Aunt Jean after the War, I often favour stars with some personal connection, in my imagination...by Y'All. P'S, then there is Joseph Conrad the great Sea author....but that is stretching the imagination for some, it is a crazy world at times.

As a very young boy my Father had a prospering business downtown, so we had the only radio on the block. Neighbors would come and sit on porch to hear Inner Sactum, And all the great shows, the best was Matt Dillion, what a voice, you knew he could do anything he can't be immatieded , I was very disappointed in James Arness, no voice. I'm very glad for you Jim, nice thing Jess did for you, 2 good men.
