A lighthearted thread about a trivial but consuming topic.
OK I am weird, but I have some favorite hats that I wear for specific smoking situations.
I usually smoke indoors, and so don't wear a cap. But I rarely go outside without some kind of cap.
I do have quite a collection of ball caps. I have a rule that the cap cannot match the activity. So I never wear my Jeep hat while driving the jeep. I never wear one of my many tackle and fly shop hats while fishing. Various music festival related caps are forbidden to me while playing my mandolin or attending a festival. I am lucky however, in that I do not have any tobacco shop hats, or the like. Any of my ball caps can accompany smoking. My ball cap of choice for smoking is my Arkansas Razorback hat, black with a bright red razorback hog on it. I love to smoke in that thing. I do sometimes wear my pro-rodeo cap, (which of course I never wear when attending a rodeo, which I do from time to time). The ball cap goes exceedingly well with a cob. Something about the two together.
My normal smoking hat, however, is what some call a slouch cap, or a newsboy's cap. I have them in various significant plaid patters, solid colors, and leather, and corduroy. Many of them are Irish, or meant to look Irish. They go well with most briars. I have a cool leather one that I really like to wear when smoking. The brown color goes with the briar I am smoking.
I have a bowler, a.k.a a derby. Quite a few actually. Many are wool, but one of my favorites is made of felted beaver hair. These hats go well with a churchwarden. Really well. I love the combination. People will look at me funny, but they will anyway, smoking a churchwarden, and since pipe smoking is an anachronism in our culture anyway, why not the hat too?
OK, yea, I do have a "genuine" tricorn. I got it in Williamsburg Viginia. It is not a cheapo touristy toy hat, but the real deal. I use that often enough with, you guessed it, my clay pipes. Sometimes even indoors, when I smoke a clay, I like to put that hat on. No, I don't pretend to be a colonial, or a pirate, I think among the pipes, the clay is the most anachronistic, and so again, I say, why the heck not.
I know, I am weird. Someday I may need a keeper. But certainly I will not die of boredom. (And neither will my keeper.)

So in the future, when I describe what I am smoking and in what pipe I am smoking it, and what I am drinking, and what I may be listening to or reading, I will include some information about the particular head gear I have donned.

If I'm wearing a hat, it's either a baseball cap while mowing (with a cob), or a Scully/newsboy/driver's cap. I have them in black or charcoal. I wear nothing but black shirts year round (the OCCASIONAL navy blue or Hunter green, but it's rare as hen's teeth). I usually don't wear a hat in the shop, but I did tonight. Any and all pipes are smoked in these two haberdashery accoutrements.
I forgot. I wear a beanie in the shop in the winter. It's black. Ugly pipes go well with it.

Not much of hat wearer I have some old caps that I like a Raiders LA, Yellow Hershey's Chocolate and nice Disney Grumpy hat. For cold weather I have a Navy issued full face watch cap set with the extreme cold weather wool and fur hood. Duane pulls off that hat pretty good I would look out of place wearing one.

That's a really great story. jeffd. You need to post some picture though, methinks. What surprises me is the link between the bowler with the churchwarden as they seem to go together, but that goes against the main logic of not wearing something that goes with the activity. You need to wear your tricorn with cobs and wear a coonskin cap when smoking the churchwarden.

I have to admit that as a younger man it looked ridiculous on me but kept the rain off. As years past, either it grew on me or I grew on it and now it's just one of those things that makes me, me.😁

I'm always in either a ball cap or visor. I've tried different styles of hats but can't pull them off so I stick with what works for me.

Wife bought me this at Dillard’s a decent men’s store , this is my furneal hat, seems I’ve been wearing it a lot nowadays, on porch smoking it’s my John Deere bill hat as porch faces east and sun gets in my eyes, for years my go to hat was a Stetson Stockmans hat, look close and you’ll see in the band a sterling silver pipe pin made by a jeweler from Foly Alabama, esteemed member of another pipe forum.

That there is a nice hat. I love the pipe ornament on the brim.

For the few times I go out, it is usually my ball cap from Rudys BBQ in Texas, or my Kermit (frog) hat.

I don't wear hat often. It seems to cut the flow of blood to my brain and I pass out. D***n inconvenient.

Tosh reminds me of Hemingway. That is a most kind comment. Thank you. After rolling on the floor laughing, I decided to emulate Papa H's writing style. Short sentences. Short paragraphs. Few -ly adverbs.

Flat caps here. Wool in the winter, Cotton in the summer, and whatever seems right in between. As I'm follicaly challenged, a hat of some sort is usually necessary to avoid discomfort and/or frying my scalp.

I've worn hats all my life but don't have a "pipe hat" so to speak. In the summer it's a Panama either one of my Cuencas or when going out somewhere dressed up one of my Montecristis. In the winter one of my felts either my Stylemaster or Squater Akubras. I smoke a pipe or cigar with any of these! I'm wearing one of my Akubras in my avatar.

I have a lot of hats, rarely wear one though.
Not pipe related, but whenever shooting, along with eye and ear protection, always wear a hat.... hot ejected brass especially of small calibers can lodge between the glasses and the eyeball.

I usually wear a hat out outside. The ultraviolet radiation here is harsh on the bare head. The winters are cold. My hair is cut short at 1/2 inch. Thus, a heat is essential.
I wear Irish flat hats.
Stetson wide brimmed Western hats.
Stetson narrow brimmed fedoras.
Straw Western style hats in summer, incuding a very wide brimmed sombrero style.

Look at the glasses in the post above yours. these are Bolle and they fit tighter than any shooting glasses I have ever worn. 12 to 16 on amazon

I have shooting glasses with a prescription to give me eagle eye vision on the front sight, I could have bought pricey frames specifically for that (face hugging) but in my case a hat is a lot cheaper, and it helps with the sun and glare.
