I have a sneaking suspicion that they're the the John Cotton's Double Pressed repackaged. One bright virginia, and one Dark Fired? Hmmmmmmmm... I haven't tried the new H&H ones, and I probably won't buy them, but I'm still suspicious.

Hi Oh my, please do not tell me you, the great Cramptholomew , are entering the latter stages of a pipe smoker's development, potentially leading to the codgy old pipe smoker? You are too young to be given to fits of conspiracy, opinions that are considered facts, grumpy attitudes, hermit like behaviors and a dismissive arrogance that is unwarranted and sometimes unfounded. Of course, there are other unlisted behaviors and not all codgy old pipe smokers exhibit every trait nor are these traits in equal proportion. However, codgy old pipe smokers in all forms and iterations are unmistakable. .......... Turn back my friend, you are still a relatively young man with a bright future!!! My sincerest wish for you, Cramptholomew , is that you look to the examples of a few of the patch's elderly statesmen, that somehow missed the codgy path turning to a different direction. In your search, be careful and do not to be deceived by other Patch members, who are codgy old pipe smokers, that appear as angels of light. Watch thoughtfully and know that your path is not set. The dark side is very seductive. If one enters the living in one's own private Idaho stage, it is impossible to return..... Kentucky example: www.pipesandcigars.com/p/john-cottons-double-pressed-kentucky/2021432/www.pipesandcigars.com/p/hearth-home-slow-aged-smoky-mountain/2023894/They are not even close to $30 a tin. However, if you mean buying two tins to compare the price becomes around 30. Ar Cigarbid the two John Cotton pressed offerings can be won for around $7-9 a tin.

You are sage, my friend, and I DID think twice before vocalizing my conspiratorial intonations. But, then, I said, "To hell with it. This should be interesting." I've had a bad day, and my mood is indeed leaning towards codgerly and disgruntled. I do still wonder, though... What if...? I do not, however, view my opinions as fact. Just a mere supposition. Do I, the great Cramptholomew, need a new tin foil hat? As my father would say, "could be...".

Cramptholomew an anthem that touches all hearts and serves as a warning!!! The blends (John Cotton vs HH) appear to go through a different process (The John Cotton is double pressed) though both are pressed tobaccos. I am not sure how similar the components are. If I was to guess, they probably share things in common. But that is all academic (not really) as I am happy to hear you are still cautious and a man of vision, who hopefully will not fall short but continue the race!!!!

Well, the reason I brought it up was - both are double pressed. And, both come in only a Virginia or dark fired option. The "aged" version is pressed, then re-pressed, and left IN the press for a month. It doesn't SAY the exact method for the John Cotton versions - only that they're pressed, rubbed out, and pressed again. But, for how long? Again, disgruntled today, and Hearth & Home fully bore my passive aggressive outburst.

Cramptholomew , I guess one can see it that way. The HH is "pressed into cakes and transferred to holding presses" while the John Cotton "is pressed, sliced into flakes which are then tumbled out into a ribbon. The tobacco is allowed to breathe and then moved back to the press to be formed into a crumble cake." I can also see where the difference lies and why John Cotton can be called double pressed and the HH pressed. PS It is good to hear you have not left reality yet. It might happen to any of us. It has happened to a number of us. We keep a lit candle in vigil for those poor souls who have gone the way of the codger....

Lane won the John Cotton throw down before P/C but alas Leo is discontinued and not pressed. I wish all well in your excessive tobacco purchasing disorders.

that's for two tins. Haha. LOL. Even still, it's a substantial increase. They are still sold at their original price points. The blends are fairly new (The HH blends hace only been recently offered). Still they are on the high side of most tins per ounce offered. Are they worth it? Depends on one's palate and pocketbook.

chasingembers Let's see... I am not saying folks have never tinned the same tobacco under different names. A person's suspicions can also be entertaining and provide interesting topics to explore. But be cautious, fellow travelers, as the aforementioned behavior might mean one is teetering on the edge of or already walking down the path of the codgy old pipe smoker. For example, there are folks who spend their time on blogs and forums swearing that Blend A and Blend B are the same with little evidence other than their own palate, sometimes inspired by a quick reading of the components and visual inspection. Occasionally, I have seen these ideas countered by blenders and trusted palates in an attempt to correct the codgy pipe smokers, causing the latter to go silent or weakly protest maintaining their position against those who are better informed. These folks can and do reappear on different forums and blogs with the same ideas, based on the same evidence, unmoved or unshaken in their grim determination. So the question is, what do we know of HH and John Cotton pressed blends? They are advertised as different in that HH and John Cotton cakes apparently employ distinct takes on pressing the blends. It might be that HH and John Cotton only differ in this regard. If these two methods promote a contrast in flavor, then the blends are also different in taste (This can be tested. If the flavors are too close for my judgement, I would employ a larger sample size, trusted palates etc.).* I never heard or read what Jeremy said. What your post communicates to me is unless the owner, employer, retailer, researcher, in other words, someone who has first-hand evidence comes forth to spill the beans, one has to be careful in the nature of one's speculation. The codgy old pipe smoker is calling each of us to join him........Seductive and powerful he is Hmmmmmm All said and done I did this out of a sense of duty for brave Cramptholomew to be sure he was not taking the wrong path. I will not deny an attempt at humor as well. * Further even as blends have common components (Latakia, Oriental, Virginia, etc.), these individual ingredients might differ in their proportions, growing region, varieties, quality, conditioning, etc. When the latter element/elements is/are tweaked or changed these blends are effectively different as well. When it comes to the components in the comparable HH and John Cotton pressed blends, I do not know what, if anything, has been altered. It would not surprise me if the blends differ a bit here as well.

qmechanics Not really, all you have to do is ask, blenders can be very forthcoming, no mystery, speculation, or need for discussion. pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/bluegrassbrian-i-stand-corrected.72983/ Next time I talk to Dan or Simon of the Standard Tobacco Company of Pennsylvania I'll ask about repackaging, but since it sounds as if my integrity is in question, I'll likely not post anything about it here.
