Update: Shank repair / reshape complete, and 100 grit sanding nearly complete. I'm actually going to step up to 150 now, and just take a little longer on that grit so I don't over do the 100 around the shank. you're doing a great job. Keep it up, buddy.

Thanks guys! TBH with as many mistakes as I've made, I think its turning out fabulously for something don't mostly with hand tools. I'ts going to be MUCH nicer than I expected, and I've found a new hobby. I've always enjoyed working with my hands, but cant afford a proper wood-shop. This is a nice compromise that will let me make things I truly like!
Once I can get the drill press I want I will try my hand at starting with a block of hardwood. Until then I'll get a pre-drilled block either on amazon or Vermont Freehand once a month or two and carve it.

Heres after sanding to 320 grit. I'm going all the way to 800, maybe 1200. I've applied stain between sanding, probably largely a waste but it seemed like a good idea and its letting me see the grain better

As a side note, I really don't like the look of the shank, I might stain it black to hide the obvious difference, but I don't know yet.

So, disclaimer. I tend to fixate when Im working on something. I worked on this literally all day, and completed it. I know I have a lot to learn, and I know I made some mistakes the pro's will easily see, but I think my first carve turned out DAMN fine! Here she is: And the unfortunate result of my mistakes with the stem / shank Now the only thing left is to get some activated charcoal and coat the bowl. Then wait another 7 days (wont get that till the 15th) and smoke it!

It looks fine to me! Not bad at all for a first attempt...Bach wrote Achy Breaky Heart before he hammered out Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. So you are on track for success! Hope to handle it on December 14th at the pipe club meeting!

I would like to thank Cramptholemew, Taharris and RDpipes for the advice given, I ended up using a modified concglomerate of all of it based upon what I believe my skill level to be.
Next time I dont shave the shank down till I'm at the final shaping!

Final update.. It smokes even better than it looks! Only downside; the more I look at it and handle it the more mistakes I can see... Ahh well, still damn fine for a first carve! I'm actually quite proud of it!

You did just fine I cannot stress enough how well it turned out with very basic tools and being your first pipe.

You don't need a bowl coating to smoke it unless you feel the bowl is too thin or there's a large pit in the chamber.

Truth be told I was always afraid to smoke an uncoated pipe. However, my impatience and all the research I've done here made me try it. it would seem my cadence is plenty slow because two bowls later and the ball is not even scorched, but the chamber does have the beginnings of a cake so I'm going to just keep it in my rotation!

Good for you sir, I personally don't care for bowl coatings but, I know some do and I won't usually put them in my own pipes unless I'm asked or I feel a need to.

In fairness, I did wipe with honey and some ash from another pipe, but I ended up wiping that clean so the chamber wood was just a little darker, like it had been stained. (Still pretty much is, since I've only got two smokes on it LOL)
I probably wont bother with coatings on any future carves. (Which will be coming soon. ordering a pearwood block on payday, $20 predrilled is something I can live with to enjoy my fun)
